Whoa! It looks like I may have my hands on this beauty by the end of the day! Apparently it has had a few upgrades on as well. This isn't a 68k, but by golly - the potential to have my own OS X (with work) machine is just too much!

Sweet! I almost bought a 9600/180 MP at a garage sale a couple of years ago. They wanted $100 for it, but that was more than I was willing to pay at the time. So I left. Then non-buyers remorse got to me and I went back later in the day to the sale to try to bargain. It was gone!

I'll always remember that 9600 as one of the Macs that got away.

So I brought it home, took it out of the box and out came a 8100/110. Arg! Not exactly a 9500/180MP. <sigh>

I cracked the case was pleasantly suprised however. Inside is a Sonet Cresendo/Nubus G3 400Mhz|1MB card! Not bad at all.

Gotta go, I've some geeking to do now. :-)

Shame, but the G3 makes up for it, you can actually bodge it so the HPV card still fits, you just need to make sure everything is securely held down.

So what should be done with this new beastie? I'd throw Debian on it if I thought the G3 card would work, unfortunately I doubt there are Sonnet "extensions" for Linux. :-)

I'd put BeOS on it if it weren't for it's 601 CPU (603 or better req'd) and likewise with the G3 card.

OS X is obviously out the window.

As my rapid research last night tells me, Mac OS 9.1 is as high as it'll go, G3 card or not. Apparently nubus architecture was removed in 9.2. This makes no sense to me. Why remove support on the last point release of an outgoing OS?

So 9.1 it is. Now what? If I'm going to keep this thing around I want to do something creative with it!

Got AV?

COPLAND!!!

Copland is your BEST BET for something creative, debian linux won't work, G3 or not, there's not many linuxes that'll run on the NuBus and mklinux is pretty old and IIRC, not updated often enough to be useful.

If you can find and run copland (talk to da penguin and MacLover 5 for where to find it, and also look on the MLAhotline servers) then you'll have one of the coolest prerelease systems ever

Debian won't run on it? Tell that to my PowerMac 6100/60! :-)
It's quite possible to get it running using the MKLinux boot loader.

I've done some more research since this morning and apparently it may be possible to get the G3 working in Linux as well, as long as I get the Sonnet extension loaded before the MKLinux boot manager, perhaps by using conflict catcher. <pondering>

Copland would definatley be cool. If anyone wants to donate a copy, by all means!

Like Cory said, it's on the HL server. Try and see if you can get both builds, that is D11E4, and D7E1. Do you have one of them HDI adapters so you can hook a monitor up to the BIV? That would be cool, because then you could test D7E1, which i believe has a problem with the Power Mac AV Card. Either way, have fun!

but I have the adaptor that'll allow me to use this baby on a regular mac!

it may only operate at 640 by 480, but pair this things' superb delights with the 6500's subwoofer, and you've got Cory's perfect Audio JukeBox Matchup!
