I've heard that apple has this thing going... where they keep identical builds of OSX going.... but for intel platform... like Mac OS X.2 for peesee...

I'm just interested in this... maybe if anyone knows why they're doing this... if they'll ever stop... maybe they're going to release a cheapo X86 server box? ahh the fantasies

It's mostly prototype and to allow them to keep in line with Drawin technologies which also run on Intel/PPC.

Plus, the software is like a small card up thier sleeve. If I were Apple I would releaese it for free, and give the finger to MS. I know for a fact Bill would be pissed, I would have destroyed the market.

OH! that would be UBER COOL!!!

I would even download it if I had to!

I can see maybe not releasing OSX server for free... but inexpensively... maybe jaguar client and the iApps for free maybe to download and for like... $20 on CD but without documentation...

Hmm, except releasing a version of OS X for intel for FREE would also kill the Mac market!

I'm also not so sure that it is kept as up to date as you lot seem to think. There was a lot of talk of marklar about 6? months ago, particularly on Appleinsider

I honestly believe that there is no current x86, os x. The furthest the GUI got, IMO, was server 1.1, the sans-aqua one. That was never released for x86, but since darwin has, and IMO, that is all that remains of x86 stuff. The *probably* have all the things in place to take off and make the OS on x86, but I doubt they exist and just float around the dark corridors of apple's basement. Its a waste of a little companies R&D.

Some groupd could write a GUI up for darwin if they felt compelled though, and, in essence it would be OS X, deep, deep inside.

yeah... it's fun to dream about though... even if they weren't going to give it away for free or anything...

Actually, the original plan for my Portals™ OS was going to be making a windowing system and porting some applications onto a darwin base for PowerPC and/or intel computers.

I know. If anything, it should cost the same as the Mac version, or more. But yeah, its probably not coming out of Apple any time soon, if ever.

ahwell... as said before, it'd be great if they did make a cheapo server box "Apple WorkGroup Server" for cheap... and it's always great to dream!

/me thinks of an eMachine box with cheap 15 or 17" crt sold as the "workgroup server" package

and you think we'll believe that apple would choose Dell?

personally, I think that apple should bring back the design from the AWGS 9150 when making the AWGS P4/2500 (or whatever it is)

I'd rather have a quad-eight G5 with 32-64GB of RAM and 2-4 TB of hdd space though...

and it needs to be in the ANS 700 case! (or one similar in size)

Agreed. But Apple would never outsource it to a PC company.

what if they "went 4400 on us" again? HUH?

/me imagines Acer building the AWGS P4/whatever

heh 'funny'

Maybe. Judging by how silly Apple is these days i wouldn't doubt it if they did a 4400 again.

heh... well I think that apple *should* do all of their designs in-house.. it works better that way... I mean the 4400 is still a mac and I'd love one... but it LOOKS horrific compared to most other macs....

Agreed. A 4400 still looks better than, say, an Ipex.

What is this Ipex thing that you really hate? Is it the Australian version of Compaq.

Apple need to hold a design contest and the winner's design is used for the new machines and the winners and runners up get cool free prizes.

A really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really evil computer company. Go here. And yes, I do have some very valid reasons as to why i hate them. Ask me about it on AIM or something, because i can't be bothered typing it all out now.

Someone needs to destroy every compauter company market including Apple's and make people start from scratch, like a Dark Ages deal.

I'm getting sick of these stupid companies being jerks. They are not companies anymore, just oversized bank accounts under the control of some pathetic loser who has too much ,oney and not enough girls.

Why would it destroy the Mac market?

Mac make computers for Mac & these are superior because Apple has control over the manafacturer, whereas pc's are just made by any Tom Dick or Harry.

The two worlds do from what I've seen keep themselves quite seperate(pc & Mac) so releasing osx on pc's would just advertise what Apple can do to those die hard pc ppl(& there are alot of them about who consider Apple to be second best).

Yes, but OS X for Intel would sell quite well. Very well, in fact. And then Apple would probably have to stop making Macintosh hardware, as it wouldn't be profitable anymore now that the Mac OS runs on Intel. On top of that, there is a risk of viruses and stuff being created for the platform, and eventually, you'd end up with something like Windohze. Apple would become the new cat herder.

Haven't you noticed the way Mordor$oft herds third parties like a bunch of animals when they're attempting to bring Windows up to scratch?
