First time poster; long time 68K Mac lover.

I work at an authorized Apple Macintosh seller, re-seller and service repair store in Toronto, Canada. We have a huge warehouse brimming with every computer, monitor, printer and part from over 15 years of Apple stuff. However, it is still rare to find working or repairable 68K Macs.

Growing up, I used a PB 140 that my Dad's work bought for him. I loved that thing and for 5 years I was all over it, learning about what has grown into my Mac lifestyle. I met many other Mac enthusiasts over the years and I never forgot how much I loved that computer and the world it brought with it.

My coworker had a customer give him a PB 180 and PB 190. I happened across him browsing the old girls on Mactracker and I inquired about his inheritance. I expressed my love for the 68K computers, particularly with the trackball. I of course offered to buy one for $50 and without hesitation he said I could have the 180 and he would keep the 190. That one has a trackpad? The 180's the last monochrome? Sweet!

So now I have a PB 180! It's like a souped-up 140 and it's even got a bunch of apps from the previous owner to get me started. Some problems include: no vertical movement of the pointer on-screen, some bent plastic on the trackball housing (not physically barring the ball), one of two serial ports broken (printer spec), and the "F" and "V" keys aren't responding among a couple other keys I'm forgetting. I have a working ADB port so I' m not totally ruined by these problems but of course I'm already working on the reparation and upgrading. First up: an 80 MB hard drive swapped for a 500 MB! Fun stuff; will definitely be around here reporting on progress.

I'd still like to liberate a 140 or even 145 to have my nostalgia (the company took the computer back and sold it bulk) but for now, I've got one more 68K Mac back from the dead for the Army. Long boot the 68K!

Good to see some more Canadians. All the deals on ebay aren't deals with shipping and the exchange rate. This store, do you have a lot obscure funky parts?. Everyone seems to have 'unique' parts that they can't find. Score on the PB, I have no working PB's.

What dongle? Don't they use the same kind as the 6100 DOS?

Right on guys, thanks for the encouragement.

If you want to see what my store currently has for older parts, check out :

CPUsed Odds & Ends Pricelist

And if you want to see the new and used pricelists, check :

As for the 7200 PCI PC compatible card, we only have one for the 7600 right now. You also mentioned a dongle which I investigated with my buddy (dave1212) and came up with nothing. Are you sure about that piece?

Great to see so many interested people! Thanks for reading my tale of freedom!

What's the dongle for exactly? We have a **00 PowerPC/DOS at our other store, no dongle on that machine..should just have the PC parts on the internal PCI board..

I just means the video cable. Apple cards use a Y video cable to get the cards video to the monitor. I have one for my 100MHz 12" card.

dave1212 and I will check on that. Give us a couple of days. We know what you're talking about, just might take a bit to find out if we have it or not. Take ease.

So continuing on my machine's progress, I'm going to post a new thread to make that a new topic and keep our conversation's here more focussed.

I'm starting the log of those repairs and replacements on my 180 in the Powerbook forum to try and keep misappropriation to a minimum.

Be aware if you wanted to keep tabs on its progress.
