Well, as some of may, or may not know, I am a glass artist. I finally got around to taking some pictures, and I just had iPhoto make a page for me. I've been working in glass almost two years now, on and off. Take a look here.

DUDE! Those are awesome! (Dale Chihuly better watch his ass.)

How do you make those forms and patterns? Are they cast? blown? cut? all three?

The only casting is the one with my hand holding a lightbulb. The rest are all blown shapes. The bowls were originally a hollow sphere which was cut in the cold shop, and then polished and ground, as well as adding the decorations on the outside. The hardest thing out of all of this were the two pieces that had 'stands.' Originally they were bumpy pieces of optical glass (which is very hard, takes a while to grind), which was ground down into the polygonal shapes. Each have parallel sides, with a margin of error less than 2 millimeters at the most. I had to repolish the one piece atleast 3 times. ARGH! I've had enough stuff taught to me though, that I am allowed to go in and work completely alone now, don't even need one of the techs around, and that is pretty cool

Magic Penguin does it again!

Maybe you can do a Apple and put some LED's inside it to make it glow the main color's of Apple's logo or something, that might not be too hard if you have some way of molding the Apple.

Computer parts are harder, usually they are molded in one go because they are plastic, if you molded a few pieces then used a special bonder to put them together it might work.

But you could make some really funky new age speaker designs though, those would be cool.

When I need a nice present Penguin for a friend I will ask you what kind of Glass ornament you can make for them. I actually have a few wedding presents to give. Maybe you have something in that line?

Glass makes an undesirable speaker enclosure due to the unstable nature of the sound reflections off of the surface. One way you could get away with it is to put something over the interior surfaces of the glass, which would ruin the see-through effect. Another thing which might work is to make sure that wavelengths shorter than the dimentions of the enclosure were not routed through the speaker. For instance, glass would make an okay subwoofer enclosure if it was of sufficient thickness. It may even be desirable because of its rigidity.

Another thing:

Glass blowing has always interested me. I've tried using a propane torch to melt glass with no success. How do those furnaces achieve such high temperatures? Also, what gas is used in the hand torches? Is it acetylene or oxy/acetylene?

Thanks.Go to Top of Page

Interesting. I thought that a subwoofer would shatter a glass enclosure.

The hand torches are actually both TLS. There are adjustable valves on the hookups to alter the amount of each substance entering the torch are. This allows many different uses out of the one torch. How big of a piece have you tried, and what type of glass?

The main ovens are natural gas, running at 2100-2200F. Typical glass melts at somewhere around 1000-1100F, which is what the glory holes (reheating) furnaces run at.

The thickest stuff I have made is almost an inch thick (the red vase), which I accidentally know is durable . In the pictures, you can see how it sits on a ledge. It is aboot 7 feet to the floor there, and the floor is cement. All I can say is there was a bump, a fall, and a bounc involved .
