Woo Hoo!

After years and years (try 15!) of wanting an SE/30, I finally have one. Best part is, I got it for FREE! I was scouring Craig'sList the other night and noticed someone had posted a message just a few hours before about giving away the SE/30. I was the first of more than a dozen people to email him, so I got dibs.

Turns out his office was just a few blocks away from mine in Santa Monica. I picked today and have it in my car right now. The case isn't perfect, it's fairly yellowed, but it's nowhere near as bad as my ColorClassic's case was when I got it. There's no expansion card and so far I am of the belief that it's dead stock, but at least now I have another 68k.

If anybody's keeping track, since trading my 840av for a beige G3 I was down to only two 68k's, a Plus and a my ColorClassic. Now I have 3! Whee! Can't wait to get it home and fired up...

Good. Selling parts I'm not using is helping buy my wife more battle wax!

Great! Selling stuff always works.

"Remember how i sold my IIfx and IIci? Well, that has given us the space and funds so that i can buy you an AlBook!"*

*But you still get to use it a lot.

I got it home and powered it up and it just sits there with the jail bars. I've heard of this happening for a short period when you use a IIsi ROM, but it just does it indefinitely. I haven't had time to crack it open yet...any ideas?

Either the analog board or the ROMs are busted.

That's what I was thinking, the ROM'S anyway. Now I wish I'd kept that extra IIfx lying around!

I had a similar problem with an SE I was working on. When you open it up disconnect all cables and reseat them. This fixed the problem I had.

I'll try that. I need to fashion a screwdriver using one the hex bits from my powerdrill and a dowel like Eric Conrad did.

Dude, i don't even know if a IIfx ROM will work in an SE/30. IIsi ones work fine, but i'm not sure about IIfx ones...

LEM says IIfx ROM's work better than IIsi ROM's, actually.

I must say that, as much as i love my Performa 578, the SE is my favorite 68k. Its just so... usable still.

System 6.0.8 runs like a dream from floppy, and if i had the networking capabilities i would use mine as a floppy-driven mail server! Thats one of my projects i have on the back burner, making the SE FDHD a floppy-driven mail server... the floppy driven part has been accomplished, as when i liberated my SE it didnt have a hard drive. Oh well. She runs beautifully without one!

I might add that all versions of the System previous to 6.0.8 run well too, including System 1.0 (aka .97)

The IIfx ROM definitely works. Jump over to Gamba's for the details

Haven't tried this yet with my SE/30. I'm still having fun running a colour monitor off a Radius Pivot card

Mackie why do you keep knocking people?

Anyway there are two reasons, a) it was a part exchange or b) As is the case where I work people get beige G3's for free regularly as they are quite common. 840AV's are quite rare in comparison so anyone with a spare beige G3 would gladly trade, especially if neither is their main machine anyway.
