Hello, I was defragging my Quad boot iMac and Norton Utilities 5.0.3. told me that my OS X volume was "severe"ly fragmented. What's a good defragger for OS X? and are any free?.Thanks Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

I'm not sure, but i think that Drive10 is the only disk utility for OS X. And it's not free. "**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

I don't even have norton or whatever...if there is a free OSX disk utility, then I'd love to hear about it... is norton 5.0.3 running under OS9? maybe there's a problem with norton 5.0.3 with OSX system volumes or something :-\ Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" I have alot of posts... if you don't like it than I don't know what to say. |

Yeah I don't want to mess around with a Speeddisk built in 1999 and use it on Panther.Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! Before you spend time or money defragmenting, you might want to read the discussion at: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Macintosh/Q_20426892.htmlIn summary, they pointed out that OS X likes high levels of volume fragmentation (lots of empty gaps between files) as a Unixy way to prevent file fragmentation (each file has chunks scattered all over the disk). OS X disks come "severely fragmented" straight from Apple's factory. Defragmention programs , like Norton, jam all the files together at one end of the disk and this forces the operating system to start fragmenting files immediately. They suggested that the only reason to defrag an OS X disk was if you needed to work with large chunks of video or maybe audio. Otherwise, defragmentation is neither neccessary or desirable. Thanks, I have OS X on another partition so it doesn't really affect my OS 9 partition and performance. But that's good to know!Editor of the printed word, Ministry of 68k Truths (mini6) ------------------ PowerCD, Mac HD 20, SE, Classic II, IIx, IIvi, PB 170, LC 475, LC 575, Quadra 650, Performa 5200, iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |
