I have a new pc, or at least I'm half way through the deal.

It'll have Win XP
80 gig hard drive
512 MB memory
128MB graphics card
DVDr

Should be good, is half mine half spouses.

I'll be able to run Gemulator & after my experience with macs I may take the trouble of emulation.

My Powermac will be going, which makes me happy.

cool... you got me beat in the graphics and hdd area :P

Sometimes I wonder why a graphics card needs 128MB of ram... my server barely has 64MB!

yeah.. go for the XP pro... or linux!!!

heh... :eep: my iMac still only has 96MB!!!

ohwell... I don't need to drive any 50" displays with a zillion by a billion pixels in full time 700 FPS 3d with all the options turned up and whatnot

at least you don't have "Intel ExtrememGraphics" lol :ugh: shared DDR memory for system AND video...

that hasn't happened on the mac since like the Mac IIsi

I just wanna run Gemulator & use a real file selector!

Gemulator will run at cpu speed/4 * 3

Giving me a 1.8 GHtz ST!

Thanks for the XP pro tip.

Oh yes I do. Guess what video chipset is on the motherboard in this Dell? Btw, they did use shared video after the IIsi. They did it on the LC/Performa/Quadra 630, LC/Performa 580, and all of the PPC Performas up to and including the x400s.

Btw, pojam, there have been Mac emulators for PCs for years, but they only emulate 68ks. If y ou do a google search you'll see that the best around is Basilisk II. It's open source, and it's capable of running anything that you can throw at a Quadra...but much faster!

BoJ: Does that version crash XP when you exit it? Because I have a copy of Basilisk II on my Dell, and every time i exit it, it crashes XP.

Well the wife wants the system to do word processing & internet at a decent speed.

I wanted it to burn DVD's & to run Gemulator.

Is there anything else that could be done that is interesting?

& hey you just know that file systems on other (than st) systems is sh*t & at least I will get access to the files & know what & where everything is including "invisible" files & I have also used Gemulator for undeleting files.

Gemulator is better than the origional st.
Gemulator includes Softmac which as I remember I never got working, well I saw a sad mac & I saw a floppy with a question mark. Truly I'm not keen on the Apple emulation cos I could take my roms from my 840av & put them in a rom card for Gemulator to use but what would be the point?

The free Softmac does 68k emulation only.

erm read above.

The question does now rattle around in my brain, but when I had my pc I remember using Gemulator daily, cos alot of the software works & the only archives I couldn't handle with it was those odd ones, erm what are they called ah yes HQX & SEA. all the others I could do ie:

Zoo
Gzip
zip
lzh
tar
arc
.

I mainly just use Gemulator for file management it is true.

i use(d) Gemulator Explorer on WinXP to make all of my Mac boot disks...

Gemulator Explorer lets your floppy drive read non-IBM disks, because Windows refuses to recognize Mac floppies in the same way that Mac recognizes IBM disks... It also writes non-IBM disk images, and reformats HD 3.5" floppies as 800k (!)

and HFV Explorer can be used to create virtual harddrives (like with virtualPC) in HFS so that Basilisk can read them.

speaking of Basilisk:
Mine runs System 7.5.5 using a Quadra ROM, i just use it to play games when I'm away from my Performa (and as a backup in case my belived performa dies )

I use Basilisk too. It never crashes my W2k. I never tried it on XP, so I don't know if it would crash.

Another program that is good for reading and formatting Mac disks is TransMac.

When I had basilisk II... i wasn't able to make it work on anything other than an old NT workstation I had...

emulating a 68k was actually *DECENT* on a 486/66 with 24MB of RAM running Windows NT workstiation 4.0

As I remember Gemulator Explorer was indeed an excellent program for reading floppy disks, be they old mac or st disks, & I found the program invaluable.

Basilisk II that is included with that installer should not crash on Windows XP, as it's the last stable build for Windows. I also tweaked the settings files to get the best out of it.

If it crashes, then there must be some form of incompatibility with your software/hardware etc. I also use DirectX for video, as this is faster and less problems and allows me to run it in a window.

SoftMac's creator is horrible, he openly swears at and insults customers if they can't get it to run, and he is the world's biggest liar around. He is plain bad. He already has a warning on file with his local Better Bussiness Bureau.

SoftMac does have it's strong pionts, as for some things I did prefer it. Although I have not run it for some time, since it lacks TCP/IP networking which I require.

Basically, use that stuff with care and never buy anything because if anything ever goes wrong, you will be insulted.
