I am so happy last night. Very, very happy. And you know why ? My father have agreed to let me get the entry level 800Mhz G4 eMac. Damn right baby! I'll get it by the end of this month.Alas, do you think eMac is a good thing ? Don't get me wrong, i love all macs. But do you think the money i could had spent over the eMac can be spent on something else as good ? Say, a 450 Mhz G4 maybe ? Keep in mind that i'm using it for my digital audio workstation. so, first thing i'm gonna do is to get a USB/FireWire sound card and upgrade the RAM to 1GB. Ram here is so cheap!!! Please post your opinion on this. Thank you all! Edited by - mypojam on 13 Jul 2003 21:39:50

450mhz G4 vs 800mhz G4 eMac? Whats the competiton. eMacs are cool, I wish I was in your shoes to be able ot get one.Good ideas usually are created by crazy people, go figure... |

cool!I believe that the 800MHz G4 will suffice for nearly everything you throw at it, I'm very satisfied with my TiBook GHz machine, and I only have 512MB of RAM (half of what you'll have...) if you were comparing the 450 G4 to the eMac, the first thing you'd see, is that the older G4 tower would have a slower bus... and a slower AGP slot. While the G4 towers have PCI slots, the eMac has firewire, and USB, and an analog audio in, something that many of the G4's are lacking in.. You'll also note that your eMac has a 17" 1280 by 920 pixel display, I know that it's weird, but think of it as about 60 or so pixels taller than that of the 15" TiBook's screen Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" I have alot of posts... if you don't like it than I don't know what to say. |

well, i just talked to my lecturer about it. he said: "eMac is a good all in one machine. but i do know some people who bought eMac and then regret it because no expandabilities (pci slot). So my advice is wait and try to get a G4."because of the introduction of the G5, many G4 users would sell their machine to get the G5. there's might be a good cheap G4 for grab after i bought the eMac. oh, and Froderenko, hehe, i got it after tons of begging and reasoning! my father agrees and i'm done! reasoning is the best way to get your dreams! yah yah. we malaysians lives in trees. and we have broadband on these trees! what does you country have ? |

hehehe... yeah... but don't go for anything older than the "Quicksilver" generation... if you could get a mirrored drivedoors, or an Xserve, that'd be even better, because of the MUCH more updated architechture...Xserve has no audio in/out... and I doubt that those G4's will be decommisioned quite as fast... due to their duties and just the general way that businesses and corporations like to hang on to their old toys. If you have any hint that in the future you might want to add extra items in that can't be added using firewire or usb, then a full fledged Tower Mac would be your best option.:)

xServe ? that'll be way too much architecture for me! however, there's this dual G4 450 Mhz on sale. i had contacted the person and i'm waiting for his reply. If he would lower the price of it then surely i would buy it right away from him!!! i'd also check this australian website new wave system. here's the reply:
Pojam, The price is in Australian dollars and yes we can ship to Malaysia. My only hesitation will be the cost of shipping...it will be incredibly expensive. It has been prohibitive in the past when we have had inquiries from overseas. Regards, Derek Vanden Driesen New Wave Systems Phone: (03) 9882 6711 Fax: (03) 9882 6744 http://www.newwavesystems.com.au so i replied to him, asking him to check the shipping cost of that thing! now i'm waiting for a lot of person to replies my email. just for your information, i had lurk around the web and these is what i found: 1. iMac G4 700MHz, 256MB Ram combo drive and harmann kardon. RM 2900 2. Apple G4 450Mhz Dual Processor. CPU only. 128 Mb Ram. RM 4500, negotiable. i had contacted them both and waiting for their reply. the iMac seems better, with a combo drive and speakers. and the dual G4 price is fully negotiable. so i'm waiting for both of their replies. i'm pushing the dual G4 price to RM 3500, close to my budget. my plans are: if i get either the iMac or eMac, get a USB Soundcard! Propably from Midiman. but if i get the G4, propably would use any good audiophile/digidesign soundcards... yah yah. we malaysians lives in trees. and we have broadband on these trees! what does you country have ?

here's the latest update: Pojam,I suggest that you get the entry level eMac. If the price differential is the same that it is here ...we have been encouraging people to go for the eMac. You already have $1300 ...and moving to an eMac for an additional $400 is really worthwhile. Strongly advise that you do this rather than moving with a second hand G4. hmm... no Xserve then? ohwell... it has fewer slots overall thanmost of the powermacs...I'd say that any dualie is a cool machine just remember, the bus speed is slower, but it'll probably still be good, as it'll likely use very similar ram, if not cheaper ram, and you'll be able to have more of it. good luck, I know you'll find what you are needing/wanting in a new(er) mac Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" I have alot of posts... if you don't like it than I don't know what to say. |

Get the eMac, you won't regret it. I know they have no PCI slots, but if you use it correctly, that won't matter a bit. I have an iMac 333 that i got secondhand at an auction in mid-2000 (straight after the ML5 vs Ipex war, for those who are keeping track), and although I'd much prefer a G3 or G4 for its expandability, the iMac handles everything i throw at it with power to spare, except for games. I can't really play many new games anymore, due to the Rage Pro, but other than that, this machine performs very nicely for a 4 year old machine. I know this won't mean a thing to you seeing as though the eMac is a brand new machine, but in 4 years time, your eMac is going to be in the same position.Either way, have fun, and enjoy your new Mac! Its one purchase you won't regret. If that's the 15" iMac then it has no audio input. As the owner of a 15" iMac I can tell you it's very frustrating to have no way of capturing audio except the built-in mic. --------------------------------------------- I want to be unique just like everybody else.

I'm not sure. Plextor and Teac make very good drives. Just make sure whatever drive you buy is supported by Apple Disc Burner, or Roxio Toast. It's a tough call between an eMac and an older PowerMac. Anyone who thinks you can get an X server for that kind of price is a nut.If all you're doing is audio and video then firewire should suffice although it does limit your options a little. There are plenty of USB audio solutions but they do have latency issues. If you're just getting stuff off a DV cam the audio and video will be going through the firewire cable so you don't need a separate USB audio device unless you want to be able to record audio without the DV cam. Don't even think about getting a USB CD writer you'll be stuck at 4x max for burning. Don't all the eMacs have CD burner/DVD drives now? if not it's probably cheaper to pay the extra than get a firewire burner. Just don't get a USB one. Back to an older tower. THe machine would be slower stock but you could upgrade ir over time and eventually end up with a better machine. However it seems like you're set on the eMac. Like I said firewire will be fine for video. The only problems you are likely to have is when the built in Ge Force starts to suck for gaming. Anything with lower requirements than UT2k3 should run fine, UT2k3 will probably be play but be pushing it to get good performance. Most mac games aren't nearly as demanding though. Whatever you don't go and buy a USB CD burner. As far as actual drives go most are pretty good these days and even cheaper ones can do 48 or 52x burns liteon is cheap and pretty popular your best bet is probably to check the drive compatibility database at www.xlr8yourmac.com -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

yeah... and you can't put a USB 2.0 card in that eMac very easily what about a "Mac X" server? You can get a cheapo G3 or G4 for Mac OS X server Jaguar and get jag legally for $499 without edu. discount. it's not exactly a NetBootin' machine for a whole lab.. but it woudl suffice for web serving and other stuff... is what what you were even talking about? As I understand it Soundtrack is the sound editing portion of Final Cut Pro as a seperate standalone App. However you want to do audio and video so you should either get FCP or FCExpress. Unless of course you will do more audio than video in which case you could probably get away with iMovie and Soundtrack or some other audio app.Cory I don't think anyone was talking about servers apart from you. Also I don't know if TheQuietMan has picked it up from the thread but you could just get an iMic for 50 USD and have analogue in of if you want to spend a bit more you could get one of the m-audio boxes which have a few more features for about 100 USD IIRC. If you're spending a lot of time recording with the built in mic the iMic would be 50 bucks well spent. Pojam, I didn't see the prices you were give for the eMac and G4 until just now but the eMac is definitely a better deal looking at the price difference. -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |
