I was given a Beige G3 recently, and I'm wondering if it can run OS X, or if it requires upgrading. It currently has no OS loaded. - 233 Mhz G3 Processor
- 64 MB RAM
- 4.3 GB Harddrive
I have already checked Apple's site and they say X requires 128 MB RAM, but it will run on a beige G3. The previous owner claims it can run X. Also, do SDRAM PC100/133 RAM modules from a PC work on a Mac? They look exactly the same to me. Thanks guys |

Once you upgrade the RAM it should be able to run X. There is a difference, however, between being able to run X and being able to run X well --------------------------------------------- I want to be unique just like everybody else.

Use Xpostfacto to install with that little ram. However upgrading the ram on that machine would be no problem, and fairly cheap, and woul dmake a world of a difference. CPU speed matters a lot less than ram amount with X. If you have a ton of ram, OS X will be perfectly usable.~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? yeah... Mac OS X.2 Jaguar runs just great on my iMac 233 MHz with only 96MB of RAM and a 4.0GB hard drive, it's not any graphic workstation, I'm not even sure how well it'd run Office V.X, but it works, and it's great for some basic safari/iChat internet stuff.Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" I have alot of posts... if you don't like it than I don't know what to say. |
