Does anyone remember the "PowerBook Control Strip" from System 7.5? It was the exact same control strip as the one that we now know and love, but at that time, Apple only supported it on PowerBooks. However, if you do a custom install of System 7.5, and select the control strip as one of the items to be installed, it will work on your desktop Mac.

Yeah, I had that installed on my LC 580. It makes it seem more like OS 8 and it's a whole lot easier for Audio CD playing.

I used to do that all the time, and there were a few developers who made control strips for various applications they made, so it was really nice. I wonder if the SDK for the strips is still around?

:)

Yeah . I've been doing that for a while. I never do easy-install anymore. This "control strip trick" thing also works in System 7.1.1 "Pro"...

Oh yeah, there is a lot of useless stuff installed in Easy Install. I always reformat any new computer I get and do a clean custom install with everything I need, nothing I don't

It's like Apple was trying to hide something from us.

Now if I get a Powermac and put OS X on it, I wonder what goodies I will find if I do a custom install?

:)

But as I sit here typing this on my virtual macintosh, I feel sad because I forgot to install the control strip. Oh well, I can re-install it. :)

I think they wanted us to spend more money to buy a PowerBook, so that we could use a free gizmo that already worked with our current Macs.

Beats the lame taskbar based resolution switcher MS Clunkies use.

Forgot, that includes me.

Speaking of Apple technology, Apple recently updated it's patent it filed in 1995 about allowing multiple "personas" to use a machine at once and switching between them.

Seems like Apple is playing that stupid game again. Every time Apple plays with the same rules as others, it always loses, can't Steve Jobs get it through his aging brain? Go back to old school values, people would rather be rock stable and have fewer colors than have a millio colors but puke when they have seen too many. (Like my wallpaper)

Apple needs to invent it's own rulebook and gameplan, not copy Microsoft's.

Well I for one would love to see the true "Multiple Users" thing in OS X. It is so much handier to just switch out of one account for someone to check their email than to quit every one of your apps (perhaps an encoding process that can't be stopped without ruining it) and log out. Yes it is used in Windows XP too, but it is a really useful feature and will give people a reason to actually use Multiple Users.

I have to agree. The whole cube roll over thing in Panther is VERY cool, and quite impressive. From one user to another, Music keeps playing in iTunes and never skips a beat. When you switch back the song time and info is all right and (if it's long enough) its still playing.
