I just got one to borrow from a friend and I want to put Mac OS X on it.

My problem is that when it boots up I can not have a cd in it's drive or Mac 0S 9 will not see a cd drive at all. Trying to boot from a cd gives me a black screen. And 9/10 times I try to turn it on it is just a black screen.

Anyone else ever have this problem?

Interesting. Try the following:

a) Reseating the IDE/SCSI cable at both ends
b) Replacing your PRAM battery
c) Zapping the PRAM
d) Replacing the interface cable going to the CD-ROM
e) Trying a new CD-ROM drive
f) Trying the CD-ROM drive in another Mac

Hope this helps.

This could be anything. All the above and try swapping out parts until you nail it down. Also, Try starting up with all drives and everything else that it doesn't need to bring up a sad mac disconnected. If you don't have problems, add one thing at a time until you get the problem. If you still have the problem, then you'll have to swap out RAM, motherboards, power supplies, maybe even the CRT until you can nail it down. Good luck. Projects like this are real caracter builders.

Installing OSX.1 server might be a charachter-building experience for me (7300)

I'm going to be doing that for my Intrikit Weaver project...

*MAYBE* you could try booting it with XPostFacto?

Maybe. Isn't there a compatibility issue with some Beigeys and OS X, or something like that?

yeah... some people were saying that beigeyG3's were NewWorld... and there was another confusion with OpenFirmware...

and then there was the thing about how all 300MHz+ G3's blue or beige are newworld...

here's what I know

ALL beige macs are OldWorld, but somehow, the G3's (which are oldworld) are supported.

how big is the hard drive? make sure the OSX partition is ENTIRELY within the first 8GB of your drive...

Exactly. NewWorld didn't come until the iMac, and even so, the iMac was the only machine to have a NewWorld ROM, until the B&W G3 came out.

yup... that's why XpostFacto was ever brought up

anyway... if I had a beigey I'd probably run OS9 on it... I think that OS9 is so nice on OldWorld macs

(except the whole... OSX.1.server on 7300 dealie)

I'm going with the ram. You might have a problem with one or more sticks of your ram. That was my problem when I was trying to install 10.2 on my G3 AIO.

Same here. If i had a beigey though, i'd probably get it up to usable specs, and load it with Jag.
