I tried to use an external cd 600e on one of my old 68k : a pb 540c. I never tried this before. I thought it should have been simple : the connection was ok (i bought everything for it scsi cable, terminator and adpater for pb) but when I started my pb, a grey screen appeared with a huge scsi symbol on it sliding from left to right with the number 2 on it and then nothing. I restarted the pb without the cdrom and after a long time with the happy macintosh working ... (glups) it worked again ...
What does it mean ? Should I use # 2 as scsi number for the scsi peripheral ?

Any idea ...

Thanks in adavance

You either have the wrong cable, or your adapter is set on the wrong setting. When it's plugged in with that setting on your adapter, or with the wrong cable, it goes into SCSI disk mode, which allows you to use the PowerBook as an external HD to another computer. On my SCSI adapter, there are two settings: SCSI and DOCK. SCSI makes it function as a normal SCSI adapter, and let me connect external peripherals like a normal Macintosh, but DOCK puts the PB into SCSI Disk Mode.

Thanx for your prompt answer ...

My "adapter" isn't is a hdi-scsi adapter but a genuine apple scsi cable for powerbook : Centronic 50 Male to HDI30 Male( the same as item #2741094112 on ebay). Is there a position on it ?

Thanks for your answer ...

Apple made two Powerbook SCSI cables. One let you use SCSI peripherals with the Powerbook. IIRC correctly this cable was normal beige color. The other cable let you use the Powerbook in SCSI Disk mode, i.e. the Powerbook would show up as a SCSI HD on the desktop of another Mac. While this was happening, the Powerbook's screen would do exactly what you describe. IIRC this cable was "Powerbook grey" in color.

You have the wrong cable.

Yeah, definately the wrong cable. You need a PowerBook SCSI cable, with a HDI-29 connector on the end that plugs into the PowerBook (not a HDI-30, which has the extra pin that puts the PB into SCSI Disk Mode), and a male Centronics connector on the other end.

Well, it is exactly what i have : a 30 pin ...
I'm a bit stupid, but all these auctions on ebay just say it is a cable for connecting pb and peripherals, nothing else ...

Is item # 3422958235 on ebay convenient ? or would it be better ot use an item such as # 2741161466 or #2741167254 as I already own a hdi25 to C50 ??
Anywat i'm going to mail to these sellers to have more informations ...

Thanks for all, very happy to have discover this site ...

3422958235: Yes, this item is what you need to connect external SCSI devices to your PB.

2741161466: Seeing as though you already own a DB-25 to Centronics-50 SCSI cable, you could use this, but that cable you linked us to is cheaper at the moment, does the same job, and is therefore a better value.

2741167254: This does exactly the same job as 2741161466, but i'm not sure if 2741161466 has a switch that allows you to switch between SCSI disk mode and normal operation. This one, however does. And I know that because its exactly the same as mine.
