Interesting...a couple of days ago I had my 8100 open, for Yet Another RAM upgrade, and i had the case on my lap, about to reinstall the mobo. Then, just before i put the mobo on, i saw some weird markings underneath the area where the power supply is mounted. I put the mobo down, and had another look. They were signatures! Has anyone else found signatures in their 8100? Btw, this is my 8100/80AV. I checked my 8100/110AV this morning, and strangely, it doesn't have the signatures. They must have changed the moulds or something.

If anyone who is reading this has a Quadra 800, Quadra 840AV, PM8500 or PM9500, can you please also check your machines? It would be cool if they had sigs too, also.

Definately. I doubt it though. Even though i got this from a dumpster at the uni, i really do doubt that Macs that are distributed to universities are any different to those that are sold via retail.

Of course. But unfortunately, I'm back at uni, and my Macs are approximately 400km away from me. I'll try and get a pic whenever i get the chance.

hehehe... I might have to look closely when I get around to overhauling my 7300 and 6500

I never really looked inside my SEfdhd when I had it's case off... I never even tried my discharge tool!

I made it per the instructions found at the MLA website

Apparently, all the earlier SEs had the signatures, but for some reason, halfway during the reign of that model, they started using signature free moulds.

The early machine would have sigs 'cause they only made one set of sig molds, and when they run out they were replaced with non-sig ones.

dangit! I have an FDHD. I wish i had a normal SE, too, because its hard to run a floppy-driven mac off one floppy drive. The FDHD's have one 1.44meg drive, and the others have two 800k drives.

Oh well.

Yeah, I heard the they made one back case mold for the toaster macs and once the mold cracked or broke, that was it and they stopped doing it.

Hello again all!

maclover5 you brought this up but a few people also noticed signatures or lack thereof.

Sometimes a technician at the manufacturing plant will sign for a passed component. Other times, a shorthand or abbreviated list of changes/tests will accompany initials or a signature.

This is also done by service repair technicians for faster service with future repairs. They will see what history the computer has and know what they're working with.

Some computer lines may have a sketchy part so more of them have signatures than other models.

Having a computer professionally repaired and the habits of the technician are both variables so that's pretty open ended. Basically if it's signed, someone's been there before who knew what they were doing, not drawing grafitti.

However, I'd love to hear if anybody has anything interesting scrawled in their machines! Why not? Not all service technicians are created equal.

I think I've seen what YOU"RE talking about golgo... the one of the panels in my 6500 had a signature on it in permanent pen...

but what MacLover5 is talking about, is etched into the plastics... the signatures were probably put into the mouldings on that part... because nearly all of us have those same signatures.

Ah yes so if the plastic cracked or broke off then the embossed serial or whatever would be forfeit. Not good.

So do some casings have more than official stamps like what maclover5 was talking about? I imagine a technician marking would have to be made with a permanent marker or one of those electronic engravers. Sounds uncommon.

Would this be at all related to machines with known problems or tenuous components? Perhaps that is why the 8100 among others had these rare markings.

Golgo: No, it has nothing to do at all with computer repairs. Jobs started the tradition with the original Macintosh: He thought it was a work of art, and like a work of art, he and all his engineers affixed a signature to a large piece of paper, which was prepared to become a part of the tooling for the inside of the original Macintosh. So the sigs were built into the mould. The tradition was carried through with a few Macs, such as the SE, the IIci, Portable, some Quadras, and a few others. The only reason i bought this up is because I haven't heard about the 8100 having signatures before. I've googled the hell out of it, and haven't found anything about the 8100 having signatures.

Understand?

I had mine open but I didn't check to look.

Oh well.

Actually I couldn't really care any more. I'm too spent on other things, my room is a mess with parts and stuff lying all over. I'm gonna have another sale soon and get rid of the crap.
