I have a IIsi. A number of people I know have IIci's. My old HS had II's, IIx's, and a IIcx or two. I've seen some places use IIfx's. However, in all the years i have been vintage-mac hunting, I have yet to see a IIvx. Were they uncommon? Are they just a myth? Or were they never sold in the midwest?

I don't think they were particularly common. I remember at one stage I was excited about maybe getting once since it had an internal CD drive (WOW!)~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 68k Macintosh Liberation Army (now with forums!) 00007 Macs liberated. |

Not to long ago I saw a IIvx with keyboard and mouse in a thrift store for $20. I didn't have the cash on me so I left and went to the ATM and returned to procure my my new old Apple. It was gone! The people in the thrift store had to help me to my car as I weeped in sorrow. If I had had only been prepared. Now I keep $25 in my wallet just for such an emergency!General LeeMac M.A.C ( Mac Action Commando) Macs Liberated 0001 Inventory-Centris-660AV |

The IIvx was voted one of the 10 worst macs of all time, you know. Other than the fact that it was the first mac with an internal CD-ROM, it didn't have a lot going for it.Private EL CINE 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Master of the Mac II series forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 4 |

What was so terribly bad about it?

First of all, the case is ugly and looks too much like a Wintel box. Second, it's running a 32MHz chip on a 16Mhz bus! Third, although it does have 4MB RAM soldered onto the Mobo, like the Quadra 700 it only has 4 RAM slots, thus limiting it to 68 megs of total RAM.A stock IIci, which was released 3 years before it, tests 30% faster than the IIvx, even though it has a slower processor. Add a measly 32k cache and it's 60% faster. Look at it this way: Imagine that tommorrow Apple started selling a new iMac that had a built in DVD-R, but was slower than a stock Bondi-Blue, looked like it came from Dell and only had one 144-pin SDRAM slot. Yeah, that wouldn't really make any sense. This is especially poignant today when you can probably get either for about $10. Wow... now I'm really glad I didn't replace my IIsi with a IIvx, and got a SCSI CD drive instead...

Another problem with the IIvx is that (IIRC) the SCSI controller they used was an older and slower version, which made the machine useless for many tasks requiring a decent SCSI connection. For example, a burner on a IIvx is basically a glorified paperweight.GORDOOM Commander, Academic Operations Reserve (University of Toronto, St. George Campus) total Macs liberated: 4 (as of November 8, 2001) "...the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do." |
