Remember the one i got from the Shop last year? Well, yesterday, it died. Yesterday morning, i went and fired up the PM8100, and got a very narrow image. I thought, "Thats ok, i'll just go into Monitors and Sound and fix it. However, then it started flickering on and off, and finally died, leaving nothing but a burning smell and a black screen. Thankfully, the 1710 i found in that junkpile at the uni earlier on in the year came to the rescue, and i was back online within minutes, but still.....the loss of a 1710 is still the loss of a 1710....

I mourn your loss.

After the old 1710 cools down, see if you can tell where the magic smoke came from. You might be able to repair the beastie. Or you could keep the old 1710 as spare parts for your current 1710.

I'm keeping it for parts. Thankfully, this new 1710 is 2 years newer, and has been treated very nicely...the university i go to really looks after their equipment. So I'm thinking and hoping this one will last me for quite a while.

What do the monitors die from anyway, dust build up?

I never had a monitor fail on me yet , but my old 15" acer sometimes has a color problem until it warms up (one of the first digital controlled 15" monitors around)

AAAIIIIIIEEEE! You've struck fear into my brave little heart. My 1710av is dim and I'm afraid it might give up the ghost soon. Oh well, I did get it for free after all (thanks mathgeek!).

Ha, stop complaining about your monitors being a tad dark. My old 14" monitor gives everyhting an annoying shade of yellow. It will fix itself, if you give it an old whack, but if you whack it to many times, it dies . Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

I know what you mean. All the 1710 stories i heard scared the crap out of me too, even though my 1710 constantly gave me good results. Well it did until now, anyway.

Btw, I'm getting my AV enclosure out of storage tomorrow and am fitting it to this 1710, to make it a 1710AV! Wish me luck! And yes, i will take piccies of the process.

good luck!!!

I wish I had my Apple AV monitor if I had the AudioVision 14" and the 6500... lets' just say that "that would ROCK!!!"

(for TV and radio usage... like I want to do with the 6500)

Nice. Btw, to everyone who doesn't read the Hacks forum, the AV enclosure works great!

cool

do you have a special badge that you can replace with?
or was the AV model denoted only by the existance of the av chassis?

Nah, the only differences between the 1710 and the 1710AV are that the 1710AV has the AV enclosure, and the sticker on the back with the EffCeeCee approval crap and stuff says "AppleVision 1710AV".

Sounds like the same thing that happened to mine and my brother's 1710's: Narrow image, and then a puff of magic smoke- It was from a diode that came unsoldered, which shorted, and blew out the horizontal drive on mine, and the vertical drive on my brother's.
