My Quadra 700 is soon to be partitioned for use as a Linux68k box/server. I booted from my 7.0.1 floppy, and tried to use Apple's formatting utilities to partition it. However, the utility did not recognize the existence of the HD. Can anyone help me out here?

What kind of hard drive is in it right now? Has it already been formatted for Linux? If so, ADS is not going to recognize it. You have to use a third-party utility (FWB HDT, etc.).

It's a 500 MB Seagate drive, one partition, running OS 8.0

You need 8.1 for HFS+...

8.1 was the first OS to support HFS+, however, on every 68k mac that I've used, it refuses to boot from a HFS+ formatted drive even if the drive has 8.1 on it (even if the machine has SCSI manager 4.3).

SCSI manager 4.3 rings a bell! I think that was the driver that the older series *2bit-piece-a-sh......* Controller IC wouldn't support on the 63X series and limited their thru-put to 3MBps (?). Is 4.3 required for HFS+ and what IC was on the mobo of the Macs that did and didn't work with it?

No no, SCSI manager 4.3 was the new version that high-end Quadra's (etc.) used. The old one on the 630 (etc.) was 3.0 or 3.1, I believe.

I've tried booting my Quadra 840av, LC475, Duo 280 and 280c (when they were working) using HFS+ formatted disks with 8.1 installed on them and every single time it said a PPC was required to boot from them. I then did a clean format of the drives as HFS, put OS 8.1 back on them, and said machines were able to boot from said drives without issue. The Quadra, mind you, is the only one that has SCSI manager 4.3.

Correct, the 630 was the last of the Quadra line and they used up a pile of pre-Quadra SCSI Controller IC's on them. No big deal as they did their first IDE implementation (botched it up *...crippled it....ON PURPOSE!..... B@$+@^>$!...* to support only one device) on it, so it wasn't a fatal flaw. I'm wondering if a transplant of the newer rev controller IC will be recognized and supported by the OS and I/O hardware, my money is on the engineers pulling a fast one on the marketing @$$#^(&$! I wonder if by reversing the partial lobotomy, I can beef up the SCSI performance *....and clock the sucker to 40 MHz while I'm at it!*.

Just wanted to add that on all these machines, assuming they were running 8.1, non-system HFS+ disks were read fine, they just wouldn't boot from one.

Um, this is all fascinating, but it still doesn't tell me why my only boot floppies, the 7.0.1 disks, won't let me partition my HD.

Or any way of getting the damn thing partitioned so I can put Linux on it.
