I installed it into the IIsi, along with another external drive connected to it containing the system, in order to format the drive. The drive seems to be powered, though I hear beeps not usually heard on startup, though it boots up perfectly from the external. Keep in mind that this is a generic 160mb drive, likely intended for use on a Wintel box, it also says on it SCSI ID 6(though there were no jumpers to set otherwise) and the model number was WDS-3160S. Is there any software anyone can recommend me in order to solve this problem?

What you need is a thrid-party format utility, namely FWB Hard Disk Toolkit. It can format any drive for Mac, though you'll also have to make sure the proper jumper setup is in place before hand (take a look at JT's link).

Just cos I'm ignorant - what's FWB stand for? My mind keeps making me say "FireWire Bus" as a combination of Firewire and USB... and thats annoying when I trick myself like that

thanks :)

No need to spend money on any third-party formatting utilities…

Just download the patched HDSC Setup that'll format any SCSI drive:

Oh, and when using a drive internally, make sure it is properly terminated.

I'm sure it is terminated correctly. Thanks everyone for your help, I hope this program works. What I am planning for this computer is for it to run NetBSD.

Hey, who said anything about spending money? I was gonna upload it to the hotline server tonight!

And, as much as the hacked form of ADS will work, I just like FWB HDT a whole lot better for all my scuzzy needs.
