I have heard that A/UX is not very portable, though I do not know really how this relates to the various supported hardware. Have you cats tried unsupported machines by changing gestalt numbers? I know that my new (as ov yet still broken) Duo is probably quite different than the Centris' and Quadras it was expected to run on. Then again maybe they just assumed that storage was too much ov a premium, or that people didn't want a mobile "server". I am interested if any ov you have tried this? If I had some 68k machines here I'd be at it right now… I don't expect that I'd get it to run on a Duo but it's def worth a try. |

The problem lies not in the Gestalt ID #s (although they are certainly checked by the installer app) but in the fact that A/UX doesn't use Toolbox routines to access hardware. It accesses the hardware itself, and thus can only run on the machines with the particular hardware configurations that are supported. The only way to determine whether a particular model f Mac will work if you trick the installer app is to try it, I'm afraid. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

Looking through my manual for a/ux 3 they list the SE/30, II, IIx,IIcx, IIci,IIsi,IIfx, and quadra's as supported (non AV quadra's)

The major stumbling block for A/UX support on machines not officially listed is the video hardware. The '040-based LCs (LC475, LC57x, etc.), for example, don't work with A/UX because of their video chips. I'd imagine the same is true for Duos.Matt No rank Permanent 68k roommates: - "PowerMystic" Color Classic, 66MHz PPC601 card, full '040, 36/1.2G/enet, OS 8.1 - "Mystic" Color Classic, full '040, 36/700/enet, OS 8.1 - Q605 overclocked to 33MHz, full '040, 36/1.2G/enet, 8.1, Debian Woody |

Doesn't use Toolbox routines? Sounds like it was a complete rewrite! I was wondering what d00d meant when I heard him say "ported ROM by ROM"… No support for the AV Quadras either, weird assumption that but I guess this was a difficult path to develop. I'll (slowly) look into the video chips. Might use a 270c logic board for the FPU. Back to bed!

A/UX goes direct to harware and supports the DMA options on the q950 aws and the IIfx which no other apple os did
