I just recieved a Peecee for testing various OSes, and my first mission is OpenSTEP. Now I have successfully done this in VPC, but am having little success with the real machine. My biggest, hinderance is the lack of a boot/driver/install disk. I have the files on my comp, but I can't seem to make a floppy of them...Oldmacman, you can probably help the most. The files are named "...driver.floppyimage" and "...install.floppyimage" (forget what the first part is offhand. Any tips for getting these onto a Peecee-usable disk? ~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? I second that! I've got the 4.2 User image here, and those floppy images. I tried loading them to DiskCopy 4.2, which can write DOS disks- but it's file selection menu does not show any IMGz, it seems to be looking for mounted images. When I had tried a few appz to mount another X86 app earlier today, ShrinkWrap told me that "PC Exchange could be used for handling DOS images" , if indeed this is a DOS image. Meanwhile I've just formatted a couple ov DOS floppiez and thrown the images on as files on the off chance that they'd work. After all, I did not mount the OpenStep cd either. We'll see…now I've just got to get myself to start the wintel box

There is a Linux utilty called "raw write" which can do the trick, or if you can run Windows, there is WinImage, both can read and write these images. And of course, Virtual PC supports those images as long as they are uncompressed.(meaning you can use some util in dos to do the trick as well)RawWrite would be your best options for this one.

Okay, here's what you do. Rename the images to 8.3 DOS filenames (boot.img and drivers.img or something), download rawrite.exe for MSDOS (google it) and run it. Stick in a 1.44 MB floppy (Mac or PC, don't need to format it), select your image, and it'll write it to disk. Then it should work. Be sure to download the OS4.2 Patch 2 from peanuts.org, and I recommend CubX Windows from there if you need X.There's another NeXTSTEP server up on Hotline if you need NS 3.3 or dev tools for 3.3 or 4.2. Actually, you should be looking for OS 4.2 patch 4, the Y2K patch. Sorry about that. Apple's OpenStep FTP site is now a redirect to their Mac support, and the NeXTanswers are gone. Apple's legal team has made all the NeXT archives take down the Y2K patches, although oddly the earlier patches are still available for download. Search tracker-tracker for nextstep and you should get a couple servers; NeXTSTEP on Black Hardware should have it, and they also have Rhapsody DR2 for x86! They'll give you an account if you agree to host the stuff on the 68kMLA server, which you should do anyways. Like what? I'm not sure how much of Apple's old site is left on the WayBack machine. As it is, its already pretty borked, which is why I'm going to save it. And if it gets even more borkulated, I'll try and fix whatever I can. My first post. I might as well say I've liberated a PB180, a Classic, and a Plus (and own an iBook, an eMac, and NuBus Performa 6200cd)...Interesting site about OpenStep. If I'm not mistaken, programs that run on OpenStep can be easily recompiled for OS X...and vice versa?
