Today I wanted to maximize ram in my Performa 5260 so I opened the case and I even found the place where to put it but do I have to remove the kinescope and all the other parts to access the ram

Or is there a easier way?

Not sure, but I think there is a way to slide out the logic board from the back. It involves undoing a couple screws in the upper part of the back and then the entire assymbly comes out. But then maybe I am think of a different all-in-one Mac????

Yes, G4, you have the right idea, and the right Mac. But, pracht, what's a kinescope? I've never heard of such an item, nor have I ever found one in any of the 5xxx series machines i've worked on!

Maybe he means the picture tube?? No, you don't have to take out the tube.

Anyhow, you're right, as long as it's the same case as a 5200, which I think it is. There will be 2 phillips head screws on either side of where the ports are in the back. You need to remove both of them. Then, on the underside of the computer there's 2 pull tabs that are a part of the bezel that covers the ports. You pull down and out and it should remove the bezel. This will expose a small "handle" tucked into the metal plate you now see. It will look like an upside down U right in the center that's either a wire or a stamped piece of steel. Just jiggle it until it rotates down so that you can grab on. The wire ones have to be bent past a little tab. You just pull on this real hard and the whole motherboard slides right out.

if you got yours used it might not even have the screws anymore!

the RAM you'll need is 72 pin simms

the Max that this machine supports is 72 MB thru 2 32MB simms and 8 MB of onboards...

Indeed. I junked the mobo screws in my 630 a couple of years ago, to make it easier to get to the guts.

Thanks The Lightning Stalker! I replaced the 8MB chip with 32MB and now it has 32+32. But the Performa 5260/120 don't have onboard memory so it only has 64MB but I guess it's even possible to run OS 9 with it.

I just got the performa few days ago. Yesterday when I wanted to add the ram and first opened it, it was VERY dusty and when I cleaned it I removed HDD. After that it worked fine. Today when I added the ram the mac didn't boot up because it didn't found the boot drive and even ejected boot floppies! Then I checked the HDD connection and I guess I had it badly connected but now the performa works fine!Go to Top of Page
