I'm glad I joined up. All the posts about crappy batteries got me to pull my PB100 out of the cryogenic life support system over at U-Haul Storage. I was just going to recharge the batteries, but I opened the little guy up, unplugged and replugged every connection, found a really short black machine screw that had been rattling around, tested/retested all the components separately, then moved a bit of RFI shielding that didn't look right and the death chimes went away! Reassembled the lil' bugger and other than needing to bonk-start the (slight stiction problem w/toshibs 203Mb HDD) disk, he's runnin' fine! Thanks to all my comrades for the inspiration to get movin'! I just hope the three batteries aren't all DOA. jt |

Good thing, sucker died on me again! Seemed like an intermittent, tore the little b*****d's guts out again and looked a lot harder for a tiny threaded hole in the mobo for that stubby little black machine screw. Found it covered by another little plastic flippy thing. It was supposed to be holding down the ground terminal/strap/whatever to the backup battery cage! Sony built 'em good, but bang 'em around enough and things rattle loose eventually. Back up again! Love that BabyPB, I'll probably hook it back up as my fax server (receive only) again, PowerDuo is really cranky about being on all the time, noisy fan in the Dock II too! jt

BabyPB didn't stay resurrected, but i might have saved the batteries and i definitely resurrected the Z88 which i had thought was a goner! http://www.algonet.se/~dennisgr/z88.htmjt
