Hi,

My father was in a bad car accident yesterday, and the car is writen off and we are getting a nice 11500 for it. THing is, we need to replace it and we need to get a cheapish car, as this wasnt expected, and our finaces dont really streach that far this time of year. Could any australians give an sugestions on cars. 20 000 and aorund would be nice.

In my search for cars on the internet, I havent gone to Holden once. Right now, my father has decided he might as well get a decent car, so im looking at Fords and Mazda . Im thinking ahead, only a year to go till I can drive, might as well get him to get something I want to drive too .

if you're loooking for used cars too... dont' go for a '91 ford Taurus Wagon... theyre lemons

if you can say "blue smoke from the A/C and the exhaust" you're only feeling half of my pain (it was a few years ago that happened to mom's... we traded up to a Jeep Wrangler)

ML5 says that holdens are the best and that

I like ford though

I second going with a Mazda. What models are you looking at?

From what I have read the Mazda 6 is a very good car. I have not been able to drive one yet. Though I was able to drive a Protégé for a week about a year ago and I was very impressed by it. If the 6 is half as good as it, it would still be a blast to drive. I currently drive a Mazda truck and it is the best handling truck I have ever driven. I know several people that drive a Mazda and they have been very reliable. Since your going out of your price range I say go with a RX-8.

Get a nice early '90's Commodore, like a '93 VN or something, they're really nice cars, and normally go for about 5 grand or less. If you're looking at something newer, you could look at getting, say a 1999 VT Commodore. If you get a VT, make sure its a series II, as I've heard that the Series I VT is a lemon.

Just my 2c

That's the thread over at the Holden Discussion Forum that discusses the various problems with the Series I VT Commodore. Like I said though, the VTII and the VX are very nice cars. And yes, Fedorenko, I know you don't like Holden, so if you don't want to go that way, I'd say get a Toyota. They don't have as many fans as Holden or Ford, but they make damn good cars anyway. My parents have been with Toyota as well as Holden before I was even sperm, and have never had a problem with either.
