This morning I got ahold of one of the Preview Releases of Panther, to try out and see how snappy it really is on my old hardware.

First Impressions:
Installation was very snappy. About 20 minutes total, 1.8GB to install everything except extra printer drivers and localized files.

Finder interface is many times faster and more responsive than Jaguar. Fade effects, shadows, and dock magnification all move rapidly along without hesitation like I get in Jaguar.

The new sidebar that is there, is OK in my opinion, but does take up valuable screen real estate. I kinda miss the ability to see all my HD's and mounted disks at a click of a button, out of the way in the window toolbars, but I guess having them on the side will have me get used to it later.

Interesting note is that the seeded version of iChat AV is only v105, not v106 that was distributed on the net.

Panther has great potential.

Panther's snappy performance is very good news. BTW, what is your "old hardware" configuration?

Of course it is!!! I'm going to be playhing with it as soon as I can get it off of HL or from the BitStream .torrent file... (or whatever that was...)

just between fast user switching and the other cool stuff that CaptainZ said I believe that it'll be worth my money to upgrade...

of course... I'd rather go $20 more and get an iSight!

Well I just got Panther installed and I too am quite impressed.

As Captain Z said it is VERY snappy. It seems to me that they optimized Quartz Extreme Very well.

I like the whole new "sans pinstripe" theme, and the fast user switching is one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

This will be well worth the upgrade. But not 130 for me... hehehe I get education discount.

if not I'll have it from one of the MLA HL servers or something...
