it was a fair day yesterday.
wake up, boot up my 580.
play it like normal...
runs fine.

and then i'm bored of playing games.
so i started doing productive things.
clean up my hard disk.
run the speed disk.

and then i insert a boot disk (8.1)
play around with it.
delete the disk tools.
put in norton speed disk.

and then when i'm looking for more stuff to delete
(to put in more norton stuff)
i double clicked the system enabler.

and my 580 goes to a halt.
and then i knew i'm screwed.

i reboot. the sad mac shows up!
my panic did not take over my mind.

i know i have to eject the boot disk
and run the mac from the hard disk.

started looking for a pin/needle.
can't find 1 in my house.
i go to a shop and bought it.

insert the needle into the emergency eject pin.

walla! the disk pops out.
reboot and everything is normal again..

just to share my first sad mac.
pojam.

Sad Macs are very scary. I always get a very sick feeling when I have done somthing bad to one of my Macs.

I'm glad that you fixed your mac and that everything is normal again.

Cheers,

I get a sad mac when I try to boot my LC from an OS 8.1 CD. I have no idea why because it runs 8.1 from the hard drive without a hitch.Go to Top of Page

Just another tip, you can eject a floppy by holding down the mouse button and resetting. :)

Same here. I think it was a bug with the CD, as it happens with every Mac i've tested it on, from an LC475 to a PB1400c/166. But yes, Sad Macs are very scary. I'm glad to hear that everything's ok now though!

really ? you can eject the floppy with the mouse button ?
that needle cost me RM 0.30. hehehe.

but everything was good.
the experience was worth it i guess.

moral: don't screw with system folder, if you don't have a boot disk.
another moral: check out online forum first before you fix anything.

got a sad mac on my (brother's) classic the other day...it bombed while installing system 7...its had 7 on it until the other day when I put 6 back on it..but I wanted to set up a network with my IIcx, so I tried to install 7 again...so when it died, I had to pull out a system 6 for classic only boot disk and I booted it off that disk, copied the system on the the hd...it worked the first time, but not the second, now I don't know whats wrong with that $#@! machine....

I forgot what it was called but for some Shareware$$™ you can buy a utility that will actually prepare a hard drive on a 030 mac for system 8.1

the more ram you have and if you have 2 hard drives it'll be better

it's on LowEndMac somwehere...

Yeah, that program's called Born Again. However, Gamba also has a method that is free, and that according to him, should work.
