Hi,Im considering starting up a site, and I want to host it myself, would a 512/128 ADSL connection be sufficent? Good ideas usually are created by crazy people, go figure... |

Depends on how much traffic you have, and how many people connect at the same time... 128k should be OK for starters though, and you can always upgrade later.- - - - - - - - - - - - - A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation. 68k ParaMedic |

Hosting does not require a lot of power, especially when the bandwidth is low, to get *some* idea download a large file on your computer using a connection the same spade as the ADSL you plan on getting, of course there are more overheads because the computer is dishing out lots of small files. OS 9 will also suck rather badly at hosting if you plan on using the machine normally, OS X would handle it fine. Also if your machine crashes so does your server which would cause problems. A seperate server would be the way to go, something like a 7500-7300 would do nicely, you could install a *nix and apache, once it's configured you wouldn't have to worry about it and you could transfer files to it using an FTP program which would make things nice and easy. Debian Linux 3.0 works great on an Athlon 700 MHz with 320 MB of RAM... I personally haven't used it and done junk when it's serving... but it wasn't at my own house ;)My own GHz PowerBook with personalwebsharing serves http://pragma.mooo.com/personalforum/ a PHPbb2 forum and I don't notice any speed decrease when I'm using the 'book (serving it to one client overethernet, a somewhat constant load...) Possibly, it depends on the traffice you expect. With ADSL, your IP might be subject to change, but you can use one of the Dynamic DNS services to make it always point to the right place. I use this with mine, and it works just great. Bear in mind also, that with a 512/128 connection, the 128 refers to your upload speed, so the maximum speed that anyone could download from your website would be 12.8 kilobytes a second (or thereabouts - maybe a little more taking into account compression).
