They are collectable, and having the original software and documentation is very rare.Look what the original star wars figures are worth sealed in their original containers and what they are worth opened, used, and missing thier blasters. To a collector of osbornes its worth $200, to a collector of hummels its worth shit.

OMG $199 is quite serious money for an obsolete piece of machinery... next to that, why did you bid so high? the next-high bid is(was) $50...??http://mark.is-a-geek.org/ a Classic II, a LC475, a Quadra 800 and some other hardware :-) |

I had to get it. All of the software and monitor and manuals very collectable. It was worth it. Plus it is obsolete piece of machinery. It's also a obsolete piece of history. It was the first portable also. Osborne company was only around for 3 years. Plus the Mr.Osborne died. Which makes the computer more collectable. Plus it is cool to work something so different and old. Also I collect computers. If you had the a lot of money would you buy a Apple 1? I would. So far I have. Apple II plus Apple IIe Macintosh 1980 IBM PC XT Atari 400 and 800 macintosh IIcx Macintosh plus powerbook 170 and 160c and 520c
I will get: Apple III commandore PET etc

uhh... i hate to burst your bubble but the original IBM Personal Computer wasn't released until 1981, so unless you have some weird crazy prototype your PC-XT isnt from 1980...That seems like a good price for an Osborne 1 though, as they are incredibly collectible... EDIT: hehehe in my tiredness i misspelled "price" ________________________ Founder, IBM PS/2 Liberation Front PS/2's Liberated: 2 http://www.kevcave.tk = The Kevcave Owner of the Token Worthless Post Edited by - llamaboy487 on 19 Jun 2003 21:55:32 |

All depends on what your into. I only buy machines of a certain time period that I either used or wanted to have. This is from early 80's to mid 90's.I never got into the luggable computers because of the VERY small screens.

No it wasn't. It was around until about 1995, in which they got swallowed up by Gateway. I know this sounds like a pile of shit, but after those three years, they moved to Australia. I'm not joking. I have a 286 and a 486 made by them, and they are very good machines. They're desktops, not laptops, even though they did make laptops up to the early Pentium era. They did make a lot of terriffic machines, but then, like i said, they got swallowed up by Gateway. Sometime these holidays I'm going to look for a program that i have called The Osborne Menu, a GUI based app launcher they made for DOS, which has a page about their history, which goes into more detail. When i get it, i'll send it to whoever wants a copy. I didn't mean my IBM XT was made in 1980 but around that time. Thanks for correcting me. Oh "maclover5" could you post the history on the Osborne. I looked around on the interent and all sites that I looked at had info saying that Osborne company was no more in 1983. Could it be different company? I don't no.

marathon: I'd have the program by now, but I've been a bit busy fooling around with my iMac lately. But yeah, I'll go through all my archives and grab it...i know i have it somewhere, on a CD. And yes, it is the same company, right down to the logo. Cory, I'd love to get on AIM, but iChat's having a borkout. As for the program I'm talking about, its a GUI that Osborne made for DOS back in '93 or '94 called The Osborne Menu."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

I had an original Compaq portable with DOS 1.2. I've since lost the disks but there were some demos. One was a basic program with a bee flying from flower to flower with a bumble bee song in the background. Another was an animated Compaq logo. I still have the compaq but it has been taking apart as I was trying to figure out if I could put a VGA monitor inside and a Pentium II motherboard. The Compaq motherboard was long and skinny so I haven't found a motherboard that will fit. I think even a mini-itx board may be too wide.Well the Electronic Discount Sales store in Arlington, Texas has an Osbourne like that in their "museum" They also have a Kaypro (like Peggy Hill on King of the Hill has) They have a Mac Portable, portable Commodore, a +4, a TDP-100 (TRS-80 color computer clone) a Woz edition Apple IIGS. Actually quite a few odds and ends that make you say "Oh yeah, I remember that!" 6360av 32/6.4/8.1 ;) SE 4/2000/FDHD/7.0.1 :) Q840av - Alive! Q650 64/2000/A/UX Woot!
