Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, doesn't let you use its products on more than one of your computers at a time. Well, Office v.X, that is. My dad will never remember this, and is always opening Word when I need to use it, which makes my copy quit. To get around this, I deleted my copy and borrowed a friend's. I guess deleting mine and reinstalling it with a different serial number would be the same, but I figured another copy couldn't hurt. Anyway, I installed this other one and opened it up, but it never asked for my new serial number, and somehow found the old one. I deleted some files that looked like they might contain that info before installing, but none did. The result is that I still have two copies with the same serial. How do I get around this stupid limitation?

Try unplugging one of the computers from the network when you're running Word on both machines. Other than that, good luck!

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have a suggestion. What you are saying is that Office v.X broadcasts on the network for other copies. If another copy with the same serial is found, one shuts down. If you use a packet sniffer, you should be able to catch this exchange. Since OS X has a firewall built in, you can use the info to block Office v.X from doing this. I don't have Office v.X so I can't figure this out. But if someone in the group has it and is handy with a packet sniffer, this should be easy to do.

Good Luck.

When both computers are running Word, do they both need internet/network access?

Yeah I used to have this problem at an old job because they were cheapscates. Just disconnect your machine from the network. Of course if you need net access will using Word you're stuffed.

Failing that try a firewall as other have suggested

You could try turning program sharing OFF in the File Sharing control panel.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation.
