A person I work with just gave me 2 playstation 2's that have been eaten by hydrogen sufide gas from nasty well water we have around here. One puts out a very crappy video signal, and the cd drive will not open right. The other has a good video signal, but the cd drive is absolute crap: it will not open/close right, and it will not read PSone games. I pulled that one apart and scraped the corrosion off of the bare copper tracings, soldered in some bad spots, and now I have a somewhat-working ps2 with a noisy fan and a broken cd drive.

This person is also going to give me a Xbox that is corroded to see if I can fix it. Both companies do NOT cover such damage under warranty, but Sony did replace it once. Microsoft just says "you had to spill something on it to do that!"- ignorant city schmucks with non-nasty water...

Here's a couple high resolution scans of the ps2 mainboard where you can see the black corrosion on the bare copper: http://68k.dyndns.org/ps2/ps2.html

well, hydrogen sulfide (HS) is an acid gas, just like gaseous HCl. The sulfur in HS has a low oxidation state, so it smells strongly of "rotten eggs", and anyone who isn't used to it notices it.

Not a pretty sight. If I had to have gear in that enviroment, I'd look into coating the circuit boards to protect them.

Good luck fixing it. You've got some bad damage there.

Hmm could be they didnt remove the flux when they soldered the board together. That stuff is acidic and corrodes metal when heated. Still from what I seen in those pictures if that was caused by bad well water you better move NOW. Does your other electronics look like that after a year?

Hmm, out of curiousity, what interface does the PS/2's CD drive use? Is it standard IDE, laptop IDE, SCSI, or some sort of crappy proprietry interface? You might be able to hack in a drive from a PC.

The flux used in PCB soldering is Rosin flux, not Acid flux. Acid flux is used mostly for plumbing.

I have lived here and used that water for 19 years, and I am still alive.

And ml5, the drive does have a crappy proprietary interface, on the Rev. A ps2, it has the motor control chips on the drive, and the Rev. D ps2 has them on the mainboard... so I can't really swap drive parts either.

The rev. D seems to be working, except it won't play PSone games, and the video goes screwy during high-motion scenes of some games. guess I'll have to stick with slow games like RPG's.

I thought that the CD was semi-custom. It would be IDE but a standard drive wouldn't work. I'm not sure, but that's what comes to mind.

I feel your pain. Around here, it's mold that's the problem. Everyone's got a dehumidifier. I lost a couple of Apple 2's I left on the basement floor in cardboard boxes.
