hey. i got the updater for 8.0. is it safe to upgrade without a startup disk ? how can you make a startup disk.i don't have the mac os 8 cd. i downloaded the update and gonna run it internally. i did and the patcher says that i got some problems on the hard disk and cannot fix it and must start on another disk. anyone care to share tips on 8.0/8.1 ? i got kaleidoscope smoothie power windows oh man i forgotten but i did have 2 MB RAM just for the extensions and add ons. i like to have more ram on my system because i'm not fully using my 36 MB ram. --------------------- i liberated a performa 580 !!! it's running wild!!! 68k GO ! |

Every time I've updated to 8.1 with the machine booted off the HD being updated, it's worked fine! As for your problem with the HD, it's probably either been formatted with a third party utility, or has some errors that Disk Fird Aid cant' fix (very likely!). Either way, it should still work....just make sure you untick the checkbox that says to check the disk for errors and update the driver."**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

Depending on how much Ram you have, you can create a small minimal boot disk and put a small version of 7.5 on it like the 7.5 Access Disk and run the disk tools from that to fix the drive then boot back into regular OS 8 and see if the trouble is fixed. The ram disk of a size 4MB should do the trick if you use NAD 7.5, that's how I fixed a few Macs myself. Although in any computer, regardless of OS, I always try and have at least 2 partitions if there is only one disk, it saves allot of trouble, in the cas eof Macs, it means another drive I can boot from as Macs are not as hyper about booting from extra partitions like how X86 machines are...and with 2 partitions should something go wonky, you have an extra drive to work with, so you're not stuck with only one drive that you have to nuke to fix the problem. With the extra partition you can copy stuff over. :) Great minds...Great minds...Think Different. |

Make sure you use Disk First Aid 8.2 which is a free download from . . .http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html The Mac OS 8.1 update may not have given you version 8.2

first, i successfully upgraded to 8.1 last night. my worries does not make sense...i reboot without extensions and then run the installer. i did the RAM disk startup disk thing. i got a 7.5.5 system in my mac. i copied the finder, apple menu items, extensions and control panel. and then i set the startup disk control panel to the ram disk.. thank god it works... no hassle at all. i'm a 8.1 genius! just kidding. how can you make your own startup disk ? i mean on a floppy... a minimal one. i need to optimize my hard disk with norton. --------------------- i liberated a performa 580 !!! it's running wild!!! 68k GO !

I think Norton Utilities 3.5.3 can create a startup disk ?Here are some useful links for new Mac OS 8.1 users http://www.versiontracker.com/macos/systems/system8.shtml http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30345 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30344 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30343 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=13628 http://mc04.equinox.net/informinit/ ( shareware ) http://www.macnn.com/MacTips/archive.shtml http://www.geocities.com/texas_macman/MacTroubleshoot.html#1 http://www.macfixit.com/staticpages/index.php?page=20021011090449544 http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/bootdisks.html http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/superbooter75.html http://www.pure-mac.com/ Disk Utilities for 68k Macs to fix/recover files/disks: Norton Utilities 3.5.3 Disk Warrior 2.1.1 TechToolPro 3.0.6 Disk Rejuvenator 1.0 ( see: http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/superbooter75.html ) I think the above utilities are the last versions that work with 68K Macs ?

My best advice here is to buy an external cdr drive, then you can back up any software you have. For my own peace of mind I backed up the software I got with my 650 & then found that there were problems with it's drive, I reformatted the drive & then copied the software back onto it.shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive os 8.1 128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive PPC7600/132, 4.23Gig & 500 Meg drives, 8X cd os 8.6 Performa400(deadintheattick) 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" |
