, yes indeed

You may have read my little rant in another post(cdrhelp) & I just don't like the 7600/132,

I don't think I can be bothered with upgrading it.

My wife is going to be studying & is pestering for a good computer, she is under the mistaken impression that the computers I have are hers as well, but if she wants a good computer she should go & buy herself one! IMHO the 7600/132 is not good.

I do intend to part with/scavenge for bits, the 7600/132 so I am interested in offers for swaps/cash, though it must be stressed that I am currently using the 7600 as my main machine & so wont part with it until another box is sitting in front of me.

I honestly have no love/hate of Apple & the same goes for Microsoft pc's it is something foriegn which I just never got into.

I would like the following computers

8100/110(or indeed 8150/110 workserver)
a pc running win 98 or later(for running Gemulator)
a good modern computer, but I have no idea what to look for, an e, f, g, h, i or j Mac? or a Athlon or some other pc?
erm old games consoles using cartridges! & if possible using cd's &/or cartridges
a Commodore 64(been on wish list for past 5 years)

I have an 840av case with dead mobo(rom simms believed to have failed), so an 8100/110 mobo would be good.

My wife wanted a ps2 but it's dvd facility isn't multi region

I like my PSOne

Well that does it I am off shopping & I shall walk in and ask for a new g840av powermac beige 3 with cdvr, six pci slots iso89001, a pair of speakers, 21 inch monitor, firewire(3 ports)usb(3 ports), 2 80 gig hard drives, win xp, win 2000, mac os 9 & mac os x.

Sorry to hear that you don't like the 7600. I've got a 7500 with a 400mhz g3 upgrade and I love the machine! I'm trying to get my hands on another one. We're running 9.1 on it now and may try X.2 as the upgrades continue. Or it will be the OS X server running Server X 1.x. It should run that great.

If you're really looking for a c64, I can take inventory. I should have a spare. I think I have three.

I like my 7600...
How much did you pay for the g3 upgrade for it, emaq123?

I got the G3 400 MHz 1M cache from Sonnet as they were closing them out for $120 US. I had about $25 into the machine before that, so I am really happy with the performance.

I've got a pc ati 7000 that I'm trying to flash to a mac ati 7000. If I get that working, then I have an Adaptec UW scsi card that needs a mac eprom put on it. This will be a killer mac on the cheap if I get all the hacks to work.

What i really want to know is what makes the 8100 better? The only thing I can see going for it is a tower case that looks OK from the front but sucks when it comes to upgrading.

Plus, the 7600 has PCI, which the 8100 does not.

Absoloutly nothing could really be better about the 8100 as opposed to the 7600, the 7600 completley outclasses the 8100, from a technical standpoint.

I only want one more than I want my 7600.

Why isn't the 7600 a good machine?
Personal preference, I dont like it, it peformance is not twice that of my 840av, I guess it would be good if I had good software on it & a couple of good upgrades, but it all feels too much like hard work & physically the machine dosn't sit anywhere comfortably, wires are stretched & it is just plaing in the way. The ports on the back are fairly higgledy piggledy & this has led to a tangle of wires which I dread going anywhere near.

I shall buy myself a g4 tower perhaps. £400, retail, 500MHz os 9, what ports?

I shall have to look into it.

The G4 has VGA (and DVI/ADC on newer machines) out, FireWire, USB, Sound in/out, 3 PCI slots, RJ-11 (for modem), 10/100BaseT ethernet (gigabit on newer machines)

Hope this helps!

Btw, those PCI slots are what's free. Technically there are 4 PCI slots in older machines, one of which is filled with the video card, although newer machines have 3 PCI slots and an AGP slot, instead of PCI.

Hope this helps!
