I found a rack mounted Macintosh at a used computer store. I looked in the back and some of the slots were open and there were about 8 nubus slots in it. The floppy slot looks just like a iivx slot. It appears to be a 4U system and is white. I suspect that it might be an Avid custom system. Does anyone have any ideas?

Nope. Not at all. It's either:

a) A very rare Maclone

b) Not a Mac

Well, it is in the mac section and hasn't moved for a while. There is no price on it, and if you find something interesting with no price, they might make up something expensive.

However there is an 100Mhz Indy there with ram and an HD with 8 bit graphics for $29. You can use a PS/2 kb and mouse on it. I already have an Indy though that is faster. And a lot of overpriced Suns, they still want like $79 for a SS1 or SS2 even though they were selling LX's and IP(x/c) systems for about 20$ before. They want more for their SS10 systems than their Ultra 1 systems. I'll swing by today and look at it, but I have no money, I've been unemployed since about Feb and money is tight.

I went back and looked at it again. It has a Panasonic CD rom in the front with a blue eject button similar to the IBM RS/6000 systems. The back is all metal and the bottom row has one of those multi pin video connectors that you needed an adaptor to make it 15 pin, 1 AAUI, 3 1/8" audio jacks, 2 ADB, 2 Serial. The slots had a 15pin Mac video card, and a 68pin ultrawide scsi card. By looking inside I could read some writing on the motherboard "Copyright 1995 Avid Technologies" the second to the last nubus slot was labeled "slot 7" so there is indeed 8 slots total.
The top is screwed down so I couldn't look further inside.

Is anyone here familiar with the custom avid systems? I looked around their site but couldn't find a section for their custom systems.

You should ask what they want for it. Doesn't hurt to just ask....you might be surprised!

I've seen that happen there before, they always reply, how much is it worth to you. And they just keep saying no until you pay too much or give up.

I have googled the bejezus out of it. Ask if there is anyway you can look in, do whatever it takes, say u are interested, etc. Knowing what is under the hood will help so much.

I think we've got it figured out!

What you are looking at is an Avid Media Processor, or as we Avid-folk commonly refer to them, an AMP. As one of your replies stated in the other forum, it was indeed made during the "clone days" of the SuperMac, et. al. built by Avid specifically for the Avid Media Composer. Basically the computer is an 8100-100 with an add-on expansion chassis inside the case to provide enough NuBus slots for the Media Composer hardware.
So outside the Avid world, it probably is a "very rare Maclone" as another of the posters suggested. For us Avid guys, it's almost a relic of the past. Worthy of your 68k Mac collection? Probably so, IF the price is right.

HTH.

P.S. Kinda ironic that a PC guy answers this, eh? I service Mac-based Avid systems too. I've just never taken the Avid certification for Mac.

BTW, feel free to copy/past my reply to your other forum so they will know what you're looking at.
Also, I did not mean to imply that the AMP was 68k based. An 8100 would be Power PC, of course!

Thats cool as rats that are as big as a Ford E150 conversion van that have wings!!! If I had money to spend, which I don't. I'd ask you to pick it up for me. You see, I'm selling all my computer stuff on eBay minus the iMac, PB 3400c, and two old Pentium PCs. Gonna get over $1500 in total. $950 will go to finishing my amp (buying Ampeg classic 8x10 cab) and then the rest will go towards my "buy Cory a BMW 318ti" fund.... and I don't mean my other self, I mean me.....

Well all of the apparent video processing cards are gone, which is why there are some empty slots. So it ends up being an 8 slot 8100 with a UW scsi card. I'm still considering it but again. I'm unemployed. And I had a nice conversation with my credit card company a few months ago... Basically "If you promise never ever to use this card again, we'll cut your interest rate in half."

Can someone explain to me about the high density video ports on the macs? It seems that all macs that I've come across with a high density video port have had a nubus card installed to give them a regular mac video port.

I think your talking about the HD-45 Video port, used on the Power Mac 61/71/8100's. Basicly, along one connector, it supplied video, ADB, and Sound in/out. They did this to work with certain Apple AV monitors which had all the ports located on the monitor

The NuBus card your talking about I've only seen in my Power Mac 7100's and 8100. It's actually called the HPV Video card or HPV AV Video card. The regular version had just the DB-15 connector, the AV version also had S-Video Out. It doesn't use a real NuBus slot, but rather a special slot (though still on the NuBus bus). I too never understood why there was both.

The other card, as previously stated here, is either the HPV card (the 8100 version came with 2 megs VRAM, expandable to 4) or the A/V card (S video in and out only) with 2 megs of VRAM. (The 7100 version of the HPV card has 1 meg VRAM, expandable to 2.)

Important thing to note: Apple doesn't support running the computer without something in that slot. So all of them came with either the HPV (High Performance Video) card or the AV (S-video in/out) card.

Of course, the best thing you can do with that slot is get rid of the video card and put a G3 upgrade card in it. Then just buy a Radius PrecsionColor NUBUS video card on eBay for $10 or so, and you're good to go.

The HDI-45 port connected directly to the AV Apple monitors, and is as-decribed by Captain-Z. There are adaptoids known as the "octopus" that plugs into that and breaks out all the separate connectors. There are also straight adapters from regular Mac 2-row DB-15 video connector to the HD-45 so you can plug in a normal monitor to it. It uses System RAM for VRAM and only gives you a max of 1 meg, so the best color depth you can get is 32768 (thousands) at 640x480, and the largest screen you can get is 832x624 at 256 colors. So it might be cool for a second monitor or something, but I think most of us with those Macs just ignore it completely, cuz it sorta sucks.
