hehehe tomorrow im bringing a new computer home from my work:

an IBM Personal System/2 Model 55 SX.
- Intel 80386 Processor
- 60MB Hard disk
- 3.5" floppy drive (1.44 meg)
- IBM PS/2 Color Monitor

if i'm lucky i might bring home some other stuff too:

IBM PS/2 Model 30
- Intel 8086 or 80286, i couldnt really tell
- 20MB Hard disk
- 3.5" floppy drive (720k)

AND!
a monitor from the IBM PC! THE IBM PC... although it won't work with anything else, its still a cool find...

Maybe we should form a special PS/2 task force of the MLA, it could go on my forums, or cinemo's, or somebody's...

While I have no love of the x86 platform, I do have a weak spot for the PS/2 computers. Make sure you have the reference disks for them. You will need the disks to setup the computers. I just setup a Model 77 with Warp 3. I've got a nic in it and I need to get the software to put it on the lan. Now I need to get a microchannel sound card.

Have fun with the PS/2s!

uhh... reference disks? these have been in an office for quite a while, there is no reference disk... BUT there is a 432meg Western Digital IDE hard disk up there too, and if i can get that... i'll pop a *BSD on it and be one webservin' mofo!

im the same way as you, though... i really hate the pentium-era x86 stuff, but anything 8086, 286, 386, and even 486 (well, not so much 486, as its still pretty pentium-ish... and yes, i know the pentium I was the 80586 with a different, marketable name) i am IN LOVE with... Would anyone else here be interested in starting a pre-pentium x86 Liberation Army? (a new name will be chosen, of course, that's just too damn long )

PS what os would be most excellent to put on this machine?

Care and feeding of a PS/2

PS/2 computers are not PCs. They have special abilities and require special handling.

Start with: http://www.computercraft.com/docs/ps2sect.shtml for the basic care and handling info. Get a copy of all the adf files you can. Every microchannel card needs an adf file to be used.

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1JBAR-442PPG

The above page will help you find a reference disk.

The PS/2 line does not have a "cmos setup" like most people think of with PCs. To configure the computer, you need a Reference Disk.

On a 55sx I would try to run PC-DOS or OS/2. To get the most use out of it, I would try Win3.1 for workgroups.

Same here. ALthough for me, I like pretty much all of them up to when ATX came in. Thats when stuff started getting cheap....

i feel like i've been robbed, or assaulted, or something...

But i'll see what i can get going about a P-i586LA (geez it needs a cooler name than that)

hehehe... ML5 and I were going to start an InfoBase on older computers and stuff (PC and the like) when I got my IW back up... maybe we could start that (someone) and then move it to the IW when it's back up.

It really depends on your definition of 'PC'. For me the IBM PC, XT, AT classes of machinces are interesting. PS/2s are not hardware compatible with PCs so they are not PCs. Now the Wintel platform, "my definition is x86 machines designed to run Win9x or better." is a waste of my time if it is running Windows. There are too many interesting computers to bother with Wintels. <-- My opinion.

I USED to have a PS/2 model 30, until I destroyed it with a potato gun. It worked great too, 20 meg hard drive, 1.44mb floppy... It had some sort of John Deere markting database program on it. I had a 12" monitor for it too, but it had "John Deere Marketing" and whatnot burnt into it.

I liked the dos era PC computers, and windows 3.1/OS2 era also. I guess if you grow up using the machines of that generation you have a fondness for them.

I dont find brand name pc computers interesting at all (well except for the styling on the 386 gateways and the construction of alot of the 286/386 PC cases of the day) only the best of hardware of the time.

The only brand PC i purchased was a Packard bell 286/12 back in 1990, after that everything was pieced together by me (still is).

hehe... I like ALL PCs because I know that I have the talent needed (or just dumb luck and knowlege of basic concepts) to make them work...
