At this point people I am asking for help. As you may or may not know, there are many faults with the current Domain Name System. Right now, the domain 68kmla.com has been taken using a possesion program (where you pay a search fee to locate names that will expire soon and grab them before anyone can) and is now a search portal for mac things. Go ahead and type www.68kmla.com. We need your help to e-mail these people who own the domain to make them face what they have done to our community. The contact information is below. I believe if they get enough e-mails about thier underhanded technique to take the domain, and then try and sell it off at a high price is pathetic. Let's show them we will not be silent. We can try to block this domain name hijacker, or make life miserable for them, or we can get a new domain name. I notice that 68kmla.org and .net are still available.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

Aside from answering to the principles involved, I'm wondering: why NOT let him have the address? Then he is out his squatters fee and gets to keep a funky address that likely only means only one thing - this group. I mean, do we all have that much spare time/money? We could get www. l i b e r a t e 6 8 k .com, www. 6 8 0 0 0 m l a .com, etc. The squatter gets goose egg, not even emails (our emails could get into the grey areas of spam). I'm not affiliated to the squatter, just practical. |

Personally, I agree here... move on to 68kmla.org (or somesuch) and next time, DON'T LET THE DOMAIN EXPIRE! <<<john>>> |

I really have to agree. The mistake was the groups for letting the domain expire. Since the company who grabbed it are just looking for money, we should just chalk this up to a leason learned and move on. I know I'm still new here, but that is my opinion. emaq123

oh how i love the .co.uk system ... when domains expire ... only the owner can re-register them ... unless the future owner has the original owners permission .... but anyway ... 68kmla.org soulds good ... unless you can get the .com backOrcadian MLA Division 68ks Liberated: 2 |

BTW, i just checked http://www.dot.tk and somebody (i dont know who) has registered http://www.68kmla.tk and it redirects to the forums... so that works temporarily...if we have a top-level domain (well, a sort-of top level domain) name, do we need to go on and register a .com or .org anyway? if all its going to do is redirect, do we need to pay when we already have a free redirect url? ________________________ Founder, IBM PS/2 Liberation Front PS/2's Liberated: 2 http://www.kevcave.tk = The Kevcave Owner of the Token Worthless Post |

Hey, what about www.68km.la?.la is the top domain for Lao People's Democratic Republic... OK, I don't think that'll happen anyday soon. heh, someone squatted local government-related website last year, and instead of being a commerce site, it was an "adult" site. ROFL! That reminds me....IIRC, back in early 1999, someone squatted Ipex's website, and made it redirect to a pr0n site. Didn't i tell you that 1999 was a good year? I'm with maclover5 - .net is cool, true enough.Just that associating the term 'dot net' to 68k seems so..... weird. say it a few times, see if your head spins a tad to the right: www. 68k m l a .net www. 68k m l a .net www. 68k m l a .net www. 68k m l a .net ... hmm. Nah, doesn't sound very weird or very Mordor$oftish to me. Remember, the .net domain was available waaaaay before M$ came up with the whole Mordor$oft.NET scheme. I like www.68kmla.net and in addition to KEEPING IT we can do creative things to it like redirecting some subdomains to certain points of interests..www.forums.68kmla.net would go to the forum (we'd have a newly redesigned website that has "stuff") (maybe)(I'd be willing to have a blast at making one) www.cory5412.68kmla.net this will go to my profile, or a website of my choice, OR my own website.... it makes sense to set up a system where it goes by default to the profile... maclover5@68kmla.net someone suggested finding an eMail server and getting eMail addresses for the moderators (and/or outstanding members in such other ways...) www.macintoshes.68kmla.net this might have a list and descriptions of macs we've liberated and/or had in the past... www.links.68kmla.net who DOSN'T have a links section? we can honor such good mac and 68k related sites like retailers and other communities by linking to them... although, we'll not have NPR after us (if you watch TechTV and remember LOTS you know what I mean) by linking to people... we'll ask first www.membermap.68kmla.net do we still have the membermap? tghat's just a few (what I think) are good ideas :) Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"

I will have lots of time after next week, and a good bit even then. School ends friday the 20th for me, and my glass class is over the week after that. Ciricon is currently getting me .org for $10, if someone else wants to pitch in for .net, go right ahead.I already have a mail server ready to accept any mail we need to set up, and once I get the time DNS server will be running as well. ~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? hehehe... the "macintosh update" thing that I was talking about... the list of macintoshes we have is actually a "forum feature" I wanted to add... we'd have a new table in the database and it'd have fields like "model, serial number, processor, ram, hdd, etc etc..."I discussed it with ML5 and he agrees that it's a good idea... and that ti's possible... only thing needed would be an interface... and with the imposing upgrade to PHPbb2 we'll have a nice reason to do something like this... and MySQL should be able to handle it... Cheap Domain Registration registers domain for $8.75. I used them to get cinemafia.net and .org (.com in November!). Don't bother using their hosting, though, it sucks. I can try to get a discount through my job, but even the normal price of $95.40 per year for 500MB space/30GB bandwidth/300 POP emails is low.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Lord of the Mac II Series Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 http://www.cinemafia.net |
