I was driving to a friend's house for combo practice when I noticed a Mac by the side of the road. It was a Power Mac 7100/80av with a 15" Apple screen. When I brought it home, it started right up. I upgraded the RAM to 96 MB and installed a stripped-down installation of OS 9.1 (no Internet or anything!). The thing flies with DigiTrax or older versions of Pro Tools, and it's great having dual monitors. I'm planning on upgrading the hard drive and putting in a NuBus audio card to complete the machine. Any recommendations about audio cards?

That's a very sweet find! You will have to update your "Mac Liberated" list with your new/old 7100. And I am sure the Mac is glad to have found a truely appreciative new owner.

Cheers,

Indeed. At least it wasn't completely stock like my 8100....you got some goodies in yours! (Not to say that a ColourPlus, 14" Colour Display, AppleVision 1710, working PSU and extra HD aren't cool! ) So, what are you going to do with it? You should join Penguin and I in the mission to explore Copland!

So, what are you going to do with it?

I'm planning on using it for digital audio. Just running it off of the built-in audio and stock 700 MB Quantum SCSI HD, I was able to record with DigiTrax reliably and with low latency to four audio tracks.

I've looked on eBay for a new hard drive for the little beast. I'm thinking about something around 4-9 GB, preferably something fast. I could take out the internal CD-ROM and put in a hard drive in its place. Does anybody have any recommendations for drives of this size that are relatively fast, inexpensive, and reliable?

I've also looked at NuBus cards for fast SCSI, and there is one up for auction - a PLI QuickSCSI NuBus card. Does anybody have any experience with this card? Will it work with OS 9?

I've seen two choices for NuBus audio cards. There is the PAS 16 and the Audiomedia II. Is the PAS 16 any improvement over the built-in audio in terms of speed or number of tracks? Will it work with OS 9 or any multitrack recording software? Will the Audiomedia II work with anything other than Pro Tools?

Agreed, Cory. What's the date on the SCSI card? Is the company still in business? It SHOULD work in OS 9, unless the drivers are really fussy.

I see that PLI nubus scsi card is on auction again, might try buying it for my IIfx. Anybody know where drivers are for this thing?
