I got a Solbourne S4000 (a Sun clone) over the weekend and I would like to reuse its 30-pin 4MB 100-ns parity RAM SIMMs in my Outbound Notebook and other old Macs. Various online sites claim that Macs don't care if the RAM is parity RAM (9 chips/SIMM) or nonparity RAM (8 chips/SIMM). I was hoping for confirmation that these SIMMs would work before I kill anything (I still remember the horrible noise my Mac II made in 1988 when a retailer gave me the wrong type of RAM).

TIA,

Basic rule of thumb...

quote:

Machines that use parity ram have to have parity ram.

Machines that don't use parity ram can use parity ram but won't get any benifits from parity.

That said, some simms won't work in some machines due to the type of chips on the simm and the memory controller on the motherboard. In general, you should be able to test the simms without fear of damage to the simm or the computer. Please note that I said _should_. There are lots of simms and computers and I don't know _all_ the configurations. The only thing I would worry about would be voltage. 3.3v dimms on a 5v motherboard will probably give you dead simms. All 30-pins simms I know of are 5v so there is no problem there.

Short version. Go for it, it should work and won't hurt anything.

Have a look at Pickle's FAQ for Macs. It has links to a few very good Mac Resources regarding memory.

From what I was looking at earlier today, you can use Parity RAM, the Mac will just ignore the parity bit, so there should be no harm done.

Thanks of the confirmation, you two. I just installed 16 MB of RAM from the Solbourne into my Outbound and IT WORKS!!!

Thanks Again!
