I just got the duo I bought today!!!
It is a 270c 32mgs of ram I put a freash install of 7.6 on it, I got a Ethernet Micro dock, Floppy adapter, a powerbrick, Duo Dock II (that has an hd!) but I will be putting a bigger one in it. Also a Duo 230 screen, and a duo 270c screen that had the connector cut. Can I replace this??? I hope so because then I could get the other duo that came with this (a 280) a color screen So that means I would have a working 280c!!

Oh im gonna play with this thing all night!

Dang homework... ahh well I just will neglect school.

Congrats!! Don't know anything about the screens, maybe ML5 will. I understand neglecting things. I've being playing with the software out of the Internet Server Solution kit I just got. Fun stuff.

Have fun with yours.

Congratulations. As a new Duo owner myself (admittedly only a Duo 230 and Dock I), I know how happy you are. I'm surprised you put 7.6 on it -- I find 7.6 too slow on my Duo.

I hope you enjoy your new little buddy.

BTW, how many Duo and Duo fixin's do you have now? And what are you going to name them all?

Hehe... don't bash the Duo 230. They rock!

Hell, all Duo's rock. I should know... I have two. (230, and a slightly damaged 270c)

Congrats, have fun! I think the 270c LCD will work fine in the 280, I also think the 280's (active matrix?) LCD might work in the 230, giving you a 250 equivalent. Check the part numbers in the exploded diagrams in the service manuals on gamba, if they're different it won't actually prove anything, but they might be the same.

I've always wanted an active matrix grayscale Duo to use outdoors!

Ahh it is nice. I have christianed the 270c "Gambit" after my favorite X-Men character.
I will name the 280, 280 for now, because it is kinda in bad shape.

As for system 7.6 it is the only 7 disk I have and I'm on modem so I dont want to download all the parts to 7.5.3. Also I think 7.6 is better. It runs VERY well on my duo. No lag in opening menu's and such.

I think that I have found my most favorite mac. This little beast is Sweeet! The battery is a type 3, and holds get this: around a 2 hour charge!!!

Though...
I have a problem that I am hoping you guy could help me with. (just thought I would add this even though this is not the Ballon Help room)

The other battery that came in the 280 I want to use in the 270c and when I do put it in it wont even recognize that there is a battery in it.

Also i cant get the thing to connect through ethernet. Under appletalk there is no tab by connect via: that says ethernet. So I cant connect it to my g4 Do I need drivers or something? I thought these were just plugged in and recognized. Oh and yes I did restart after plugging it in.

TWO HOURS! Lucky 8astard. I think the Type I battery that came with my Duo is very dead -- probably need to recell the thing.

I wonder if that other battery of yours is just too dead to register in the computer. Check the voltage of it.

I'm glad you are happy with 7.6 -- I need to do a side-by-side with System 7.1 and System 7.6. To me, 7.6 felt sluggish and took fffooorrreeevvveeerrr to boot up. And its consumption of 6MB when loaded makes it a bit of a memory hog. That's not a problem for your 32 MB machine, but is a bit hoggish for the 12 MB of RAM in my Duo.

Regards the ethernet, I'll check the config and ethernet functionality of my Duo when I get a chance and report back to you (tomorrow morning, I hope). I know there should be some Apple Ethernet extensions in the system folder -- could you have installed System 7.6 from an install version from an ethernet-less Mac?

Three Cheers for Gambit!

Did you do the install while it was docked? Try custom installing the networking portion of the OS again. You could very well need drivers, which brand and model is the etherdock?

Well, I actually installed it with the OS 7.6 installer that was on the Duo Dock's hd. I ma pretty sure that it is the exact same thing as my straight OS 7.6 disk. I also installed all the extras that I could install with the installer, so I am assuming that would include networking stuff. No I did not install it with the duo docked with the micro dock, but it was docked in the Duo Dock.

The make and model are as follows:

Newer Technologies Ethernet MicroDock. And there is no serial # on the thing. but it was make in 1994 and has a part # of 7MD-E. That is really all I can tell you about it.

This is actually quite wierd. When I had my color classic, it had an RJ-45 ethernet card installed on it and all I had to do to connect it up with my newer mac was go under apple talk then select ethernet, and then I would just mount the color classic on my G4.

Also I'm going to check the extentions folder now, and post back after I do that. Oh, and cats and I googled and checked Newer's website and we could come up with nothing for drivers for this little dock. Does anyone else have one, and know how to use it?

Ok here is what we have for anything networking related, extentions wise:

All the Open Transport stuff
File Sharing Extension
Appleshare
Apple Remote Access Client
Apple built in Ethernet
Apple Ethernet NB
Ethertalk Phase 2
various modem scripts and extentions

And that about covers it. I'm not sure if this helps... But I guess it is worth a shot.

I forgot it was a Dock II, which has ethernet hardware so it should have installed automatically.

Looks like you need drivers . . .

What is borked? The cable or the connector? If its the connector, then unless you're very very very very very good with soldering, or know a friend who is, its stuffed. If its the cable, you may be able to find another one. As for using a 270c screen on the 280, IIRC there's no reason as to why you can't. I'd wanna check the service manual before you do that though....just in case.

The cable is severed in a diagonal cut right above the connector, so there is no connector attactched.

I was sitting on the couch today playing Dark Queen on the duo and I had my estimite for the battery capasity wrong. It is with the screen dimmed and no hard drive running, about 2 hours and 45 minutes!!!!

This is longer battery life than my 3400c had!

Oh yeah cory, come on! Jump on the band wagon! Get a duo! Everyone is doing it!

Well I have decided to christen the 280 now. It will be called The Phoenix.
This is because right now it is quite dead. But I will have it alive and kicking. So, anyone want to donate a duo hd so I can revive this little guy? I'm broke at the moment...
If that is too much for everyone... then Is it possible to startup the 280 from the Duo Docks built in hd? It has 7.6 installed on it, but because The Phoenix has no hd , it cant boot.

So sorry to hear that your Duo is in its "ashes" phase. I'd donate a Duo HD, but I only have the one for my Duo and even it does not sound too healthy. I hope you resurrect it soon.

The Dock modifications aren't actually NECESSARY! You don't even need to pull the mobo, the point was, just plug the diskless 280 into the dock and you're good to go.

Could I put in The working 270c and set the boot disk as the hd in the dock then take out the duo and put in the diskless phoenix?

Boot from the 270c and do an "install for any macintosh" on the Dock HDD. You might want to check if there's a missing enabler for the 280 first tho.

I once booted my 4 meg LCII, a much lesser machine than the 280c, into System 7.6 off an external HD. It was slow, but still, it worked. Therefore, it HAS to work on the 280. Also, as i said, there's no way in hell the 280 should need an enabler, as System 7.6 came out a couple of years after the 280.

I really no nothing about the 280, other than the standerd stuff, because I havent been able to start it up. When I got it it was in the dock. And the guy who sold it to me said that when he bought it the guy was using it in the dock as a desktop. I'll give it a try today and see what works.

Ok, I put in the 270c and set the startup disk as the hd in the dock. I removed the 270c (after shutting down) then put in the 280. Now in all my years of using a mac I have never seen what came up on the screen after I put in the 280. It came up with a picture of what looked like the duo dock with an arrow pointing to the center, and in the side was black line. I take it that this means insert a floppy of some sort right? Since the floppy drive is on the side of the dock.
