I just downloaded the GUI SETI client for OSX. It's a 300k download. I start installing it and the Mac tells me that it will need 100MB of disk space. Holy crap! How do you get 100MB from a 300k installer!?!?!?

Easy. It's probably a web installer, like Microsoft is so fond of using. 'No WAY, IE6 is 500k! Sweet!'

Either that or they want you to be ready to be processing a really huge amount of data. XD

Nope, it's not a web installer - there is no way I could download 100MB quickly over my dial-up.

The amount quoted in installer is the amount of free space that it'll need to shift files around and other such funky goings on.

heh....

I never ever ever heard about SETI for OSX needing 100 MB!

the data files are likie... *MAYBE* 400 kb... and that much also for when the results are completed...

I can maybe think of needing 100 MB when you have a work unit chaching program and you download like... 700 WUs...

yeah....

caching SETI WUs would be a very effecient thing to do.. especially if like... I could get a few hundred of them and bring a computer back out for offline operation or something... dunno though

it'd be great to do with fast computers (like my own) that get done with units faster than I can connect to the internet

It'd be great to do it with my iMac, which doesn't see the internet much these days.

There's lots of apps out there (for Macs and PC's) that can do exactly that - download multiple WU's for distribution on your own network. As jt would say...google it!

Yea, Coxy, your right. IIRC, this is an attempt to reduce system fragmentation.

It says that my php installer need 141mb to install, yet it writes only one file (~15mb) and runs a whole bunch of install scripts that only modify files. Wierd
