hehehehe! the30$ super quality value computer RUNS! I paid 20$ for the old AT server case (which is for very good quality, took me 3 hours to make a .5CM hole!) and another computer, which was "broken", and had a 10X CD drive and a 10GB hard drive, 96MB 72-pin RAM and a 90MHz pentium. nothing too flashy, but for 10$, and the only things wrong with it were there was no sound or video card and the OS was "flakey"; it's windows 95B! waddia expect!!!! hehehehehhhehehehe!!!!!!! now I put everything into the AT case, installed 98SE, and put in a SCSI card and an ethernet card and voila! instant file server!

THnx

hey! we need to start the NT4 brigade!!!

it'll be a sector dedicated to bringing the goodly mac-related services of windows NT to the 68k mac world

yeah... NT4 has printer macintosh serving and file sharing macintosh compatible..

I'll also reiterate how it DOES NOT lose the resource forks.

I've played with NT4 server on a PII 133 and it was too slow and painful for words. I reckon it would be worse on a P90! Unix or something would be better

Interesting. NT 4 runs fine on an AMD K6 233 with 64 megs of RAM.

NT4 server is what is running on our email server, which happens to be an HP NetServer Pentium 100 that my company paid ten grand for in 1994 or somewhere therabouts.

anyway, just 2 cents

NT4 loves RAM. Feed it and it will run.

You can do appletalk file sharing on linux. I've been meaning to set it up for my older macs.

I really don't get this NT4-thing on this forum. What's that all about? IMHO the x86-architecture is the most crappy anyone could come up with, but hey! it's cheap, especially when it's a couple of years old ;-) Anyway, I run x86, also as a server (my router/firewall is this K6-2/333 on an Asus-mainboard and a Compaq Smart SCSI-controller and 3 nics) but no way I install NT4 on there, I chose OpenBSD, which I enjoy running, but I could've installed any *nix on there... I really enjoy running old hardware with current software... (I also installed NetBSD on a LC475 :-))

I can't say myself either. I've supported the beast for years, so I do know a bit about it. But to use it? If I had a license laying around not being used, I could see myself using it over linux / bsd for a few things. Mainly as a desktop OS. For server duties, I'd rather use Linux / BSD / VMS / NextStep, etc...

Right now I have two x86 boxes running Mandrake as house servers for the Macs. I killed my NT 4 server since it served no useful purpose. I plan to re-establish my NT4 Domain using Samba to support a couple of old PCs running Windows for my kids to play games on.

My internet connection is provided by a Win2k box because that's all my satellite provider supports. I have found that Macs make a much superior desktop machine vs Windows. I can't remember the last time one of the Macs in service in the house (at least five) came up a problem. I can't say the same for Windows boxes.

I guess I will have to break down and get a couple of boxes running Windows for me to hack on in support of my work. Like it or not, I will be supporting Windows for the forseable future. The nice thing about that is I can just use the 30-60-90 day demos from MS. Considering that I use to support 6-8 Windows boxes at home, I'm enjoying not having them around anymore.

I see this thread as a good discussion of value for the money.

what's the thing with NT4 here?

WE LOVE IT!!!

NT4 is great, workstation runs well on very old hardware and it makes a nice "garage" or shed workstation for quick things like checking the eMail or AIMing or even like... taking notes and junk...

I actually kept my NT4 workstation, a Compaq Prolinea 4/66 with 24 MB of RAM and a laser printer for doing schoolwork, browsing the internet (yeah, this and a 28.8 ISA modem got on the internet!) and listening to CDs and MIDI files (soundblaster 8 packard bell card)....

Mine had ethernet also, but I didn't have a network of my own at that time....

NT4 server ran great on my dell optiplex pentium 200 MHz with 64 MB of RAm, even under the guise of a "domain controller"

NT4 server and workstation also both ran exquisitely on the Athlon 700 machine, as long as I put in an older more supported video card.

besides, NT4 is one of the cheapest/ best mac compatible PS operating systems out there... NT4 server is great for me during my 'Intrikit Weaver" project because it weaves the files and changes the differences between macintoshes and PCs on a network... NT4 allows me to change files between platforms savely and without ruining resource forks...

NTFS is also a rocking file system for the x86 platform.....

yeah, x86 is cheap and pretty carppy... but boy is it "standardized".... macs change architechture from model to model... at least from line to line on the 68ks and such.... that's why the MacOS has such a hard time going easily from model to model, IE, windows 1.0 will work on a pentium 4, but MacOS 1.0 won't work on a mac 512ke....

Yes, NT rocks on my K6 233.

Btw, you can run OS 1 on a 512k.

I'm not sure, but i do believe that the 512ke and the Plus use very, very, very, very, very, very similar ROMs. A coupel of years ago when i had vMac on my 1400, i used a "Mac Plus" Rom, booted it into System 7.1, and it came up as a "Macintosh 512ke". Weird.
