Do virus detector companies actually write viruses to make money? That's one thing i've always wondered........

(Yes, I am drunk. )

I've often wondered that too.

I dont know, but what the hell, there were a grand total of about thirty-three mac viruses out there, and there are a bunch of mac AV programs.

just my say.

I dont think they write them, but I bet they do exagerate how many they are, same virus probably has 100 different names.

When was the last time anybody ever had a virus on their pc anyway? I have been using PC's (favorite virus platform) since late 80's and I never had a virus even though I have downloaded GB's of data off of bbs's and the internet.

If a company selling antivirus software was ever busted coding them in any way thats the end of that company, and most likely other companies would take a hit also.

I clean virii off of systems at least 3 times a week. Most of the time there are the ones that take advantage of the the latest Outlook Express security hole.

ML5- I dont think that they write them but I dont doubt that they encourge them. Years ago McAfee would pay $50 for each new virus sample you sent them. A friend of mine needed some money one month so he wrote a few virii and infected his machine. Then let McAfee detect it and send it in. Then deleted the virus code and the virus its self. In the end I think he made about $150 And I'm sure he's not the only one that did that.

I could write a cheap virus for Mac with AppleScript. It would only affect pre X systems, but I could... 2 reasons not to, 1) too lazy 2) i like macs too much to do that to them.

When i first got my Dell and ethernetted it to the iMac, it turned out that i had all these files back on the iMac that were actually PC viruses that i didn't know about.

iThink the last time I had a virus on my PC was a couple of years ago in like 1998. It started acting funny when I'd try to use Internet Explorer, and then a window poped up with some insulting message and then I knew it was a virus. Wish I could remember what it was called.

A lot of the older virii don't even work on PCs anymore because they're meant for DOS real mode. All you'd have to do is close your DOS box and it's gone.

I don't know if you can use shell scripts on OSX as I've had no experience with it, but I'm sure you could write a nasty "virus" as a shell script. I'd sure hope you can use shell scripts with X because it would be really pointless having a part UNIX OS without supporting shell scripts.

Virus' are very very easy to write. I have been very tempted to make one and set it loose upon our schools POS network. Just to see the fat lazy Network admin run around and actually do some work.

I have been recently getting this Win32klz pc virus. But having a Mac it doesnt matter.

I got Nimda last year on my POS School network, but seeing as though I had my iMac, it didn't matter.
