Hello, all. New to the bbs here.I've got an ancient Quadra 610 with a 15" monitor and a Style Writer II. Its also got a Global Village 28.8 fax modem and a Iomega Zip drive. Specs as follows: 68040 processor crawling at 25mhz 24mb RAM 1mb VRAM capable of showing a whopping Thousands of Colors 155mb HD This Mac served me well for about 5 years, and I even ran OS 8.1 on it. I'm not looking to really spend much, if anything at all, on this machine. I am curious as to what I can actually do with it. If I were to sell it, what is a reasonable price I could get? Two Dollars? Many thanks..... Edited by - Wanderer on 25 Jan 2002 00:54:33 |

You can swap the FPU-less 20Mhz 68LC040 with a full 68040 running at 25Mhz for about $15, that'll allow you to run multi-media apps like PhotoShop/etc much better. Or, you can put in a PDS PPC upgrade card to run it at 66MHz, which will basically turn it into a 6100, for about $25+. Then you muight be able to get it to play mp3's fairly well. You can also put a PDS ethernet card in it to use on a LAN or broadband connection as either a mini-server or browser for about $10. You can max out the RAM at 68MB by getting 2x 32MB 72-pin RAM SIMMs for about $25, that'll help all around. Then you can put as big a 1/3-height, 50-pin SCSI drive in it as you can find/afford. You can also put another hard drive or any 50-pin optical drive (reader, writer, re-writer) in the 5.25 bay. Uh, I think that's it... 666th poster to the 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Forums Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 Visit my site!

I would replace the small HD with a larger one, maybe a 500 MB or 1 GB drive (should cost you no more than $5-10), and run Linux/ A/UX/ BSD on it. Still, it is a nice machine as-is. Would make an excellent word processor and a backup server, with the Zip drive. And if you are willing to sell the whole setup, you probably should ask for more than $2....Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |

Oh yeah, forgot about that. It's definitely worth more than $2. The CPU alone is good for $10, another $15 or $20 for the monitor and another $15 or so for the printer, so on a good day I'd say it's worth about $45, assuming you were selling to someone in person. Selling it on eBay or otherwise through the mail and you'd have to lower the price to compensate for shipping so that still came out to roughly $45.666th poster to the 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Forums Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 Visit my site! |

He said he has a Quadra 610, not a Centris. The Quadra ran at 25 MHz (don't doubt him/her!)
By the way, Wanderer (heh..), mozy on down to the Quadra/Centris section where we specialize in computers like yours (I had a 610 as well..then I fried the motherboard ) -------------------- FireWire is fast General, 4 star beholder of the Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice™ |

quick brief for you, cinemafiaWhen they discontinued all Centris models, they changed the Centris 610 to the Quadra 610 and bumped the speed to 25 MHz. However, these early 610s (like my fried one) still had the 'LC040. The later Quadra 610s had the full '040. You just saved yourself a trip to a spec site -------------------- FireWire is fast General, 4 star beholder of the Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice™ |

Thanks for the help.My Quadra has been sitting in a closet since I got my iMac. I'll be away for a few months, and then I can really figure out what I'm going to do with it. Thanks! I am man, btw. (never thought I'd have to say that....bound to happen out here in the digitized world. :))
