No you can't, well, not as it is. If you were to obtain a Zif Carrier, you could. Otherwise it's only a direct upgrade to a beige G3 or replacement for a B&W G3.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Lord of the Mac II Series Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 http://www.cinemafia.net Edited by - cinemafia on 23 May 2003 12:10:26 |

A ZIF carrier is probably the way to go though. You buy that once, and you can buy as many other ZIFs as you want. ZIFs are extremely cheap nowadays, compared to PCI upgrades.~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? A G3 400 ZIF will only cost you around $50, and the carrier will cost you around $50 as well. (both prices assuming u look long and hard for them.)But for a PCI upgrade, that is pretty good. ~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? They're inexpensive because you can get a good quality XLR8 carrier card and and 233 or 266 MHz ZIF for about 50-60 USD, the carrier card and ZIF combo is a good long term investment compared to the other upgrades. You can also easily overclock most 233 or 266's to 300 or 333.-------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

Depends on the mac clock ratio on the ZIF, can they do better then 50x10? $119 for a NEW WITH WARRENTY 400 is a good deal. Anything much faster is going to be slowed down by the memory/bus speed anyway.

Yes some of these upgrades can do better than 10x Although i do agree that anything over 500 in one of these older machines is a waste. The other big advantage of carrier cards is they offer a lot of control over the bus speed so you can finely tune your system. I had one with a G3 400 ZIF in my 9600 I could run it at 450 but there was no chime at 500, however because I could finely control the bus speed I was able to get it running stable at 485. This could of over clocking isn't possible with most other designs. -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

Someday the g4-800 upgrade cards will be under $100, so if my 8500 is still kicking I might get one. it wont be to run osx, but OS 9.1 apps would run alot faster on that chip then the g3-400 I have now. Zif sockets wont do over 500 so they are a dead end, cheap maybe for the time being, but a dead end compared to sonnet type addon cards. I wonder if somebody will oneday make a g4 processor upgrade with ddr ram slot for memory built in and use the system memory for one huge L3 cache. Kind of like a computer on a card that uses the old computer for interface.

Well some of the clones can run their bus at 60 MHz whic means 10x 60=600. Some ZIFs also let you set the multplier on the ZIF, like the XLR8 one I have here which would override the carrier card multiplier.Carrier cards are certainly not as much of a dead end as a card with a soldered on chip which simply cannot be upgraded and are generally much harder to "tweak". 800 MHz cards certainly will drop to a sub 100 USD price eventually and it would be cool to put one in an x600. However I think everyone will agree that the other components will severely cripple performance and it will be no where near as powerful as even a B/W G3 with the same chip. -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |
