Hi, I just bougth some LC cards and the seller threw in an old modem for free. The Asante MCiLC ethernet cards work but the weird thing is the modem. It's a Apple 820-0809-A Modem and it's made in 1996. I'm pretty sure it's COMM slot but it fits in backwards!. Why would they do that? I tried it in my LC 575 and Performa 5200 and both times the card points inwards and not towards the port exits. Why!?Also there's an open brown square on the ethernet card, is this a card where I can put an FPU on it?. if it's a comm slot but backwards, it's a comm slot II card I'm certain that THAT is becuas the CS IIs were in machines where there was PCI slots... and the PCi slots look ALOT like the comm slot IIs...the open brown square IS for an FPU i think... it'll work on any 030 mac that is sans FPU. Yeah, the modem is a CSII card, and yes, the brown slot is for an FPU, its for an LC or LCII, which doesn't have the FPU slot (although it does have the solder pads for one....-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

Lovely!, well thanks for the info. Where can I find info on it?, I tried typing 820-0809-A into google but no luck. Would the FPU work on a LC 475? and would I have to desolder a fpu from a IIx and solder it onto the card?. Sounds messy. Thanks again. you can get a chip to slap right onto that brown pad, but I'm not sure as that'll work in an 040 mac like the 475.... you'll need a whole new processor (not that big of a deal though)try googling "Apple Comm Slot II modem" there's more than one of them but you can probably find the info for it... meh... it'll work either way...but I do know that the 020s don't accept the FPU (iThink...) and that also goes for the 040s and PowerPCs that have the slots... Yeah. In me LC III I put the coprocessor in the socket on the motherboard because IMHO it works better there. And there's no reason why the nic shouldn't work in an 020 or 040 Mac as long as there's no coprocessor in there. Otherwise, you might smoke somethin. Edited by - The Lightning Stalker on 23 May 2003 18:25:25 |

You might, but I'm not sure it would necessarily harm anything to have a copro in the socket on the NIC. The 040 and PPC Duos work just fine in the Dock II with its useless cache and copro and the 270c ignores the extra one as it has one on the mobo already.jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. it won't fry or anything... but hey... why waste a copro on an 040 or an 020 that can't use it?Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"

Has anyone tried these cards in an LC 575, 475 or Performa 5200?. I have a crossover ethernet cable and I set it up so that anyone should be able to log into 575 and 5200 but still no luck. At first I tried connecting the 5200 to my CRT iMac, then the 575 to the CRT iMac and then 575 over to 5200. I had to switch the appletalk settings to 'printer port' and now the 575 to the 5200 networked. The ethernet cards again are Asanté MCiLC circa 1993. Both computers recognize the cards are installed so I'm not sure what's happening. I'm going to buy another crossover cable tonight. Also, are the cards supposed to cover the whole LC PDS slot?, these only cover the longest segment but not the whole slot. Thanks. Right. I remember reading in the manual for the Asante MCiLC that if an FPU is put in the socket on the card, then the rest of the motherboard would have acess to it. If an FPU is already present on the motherboard, then don't worry about the socket on the card. You won't get any "extra power" if there is an FPU on the motherboard and the card - the one on the card will be left alone...
