The last few hours have been spent installing OSX server onto my 8600/G3 It has been a slow but succesful process. I am thinking I might ditch the installation though, coz it runs so slowly. I mean, it actually serves and fileshares at an OK speed. But actually using the Mac - well that's another story!
Click on something......wait.....something opens.....wait......do something...wait.... Just minimizing a window to the dock takes about 4-8 seconds for that funky 'window shrinkdown' to happen. Talk about slow and painful!

Well anyway I've just looked behind me at the Mac which is supposed to be rebooting (I'm on the PC right now) and it has just had it's first kernel panic and it's busy dumping debug infoirmation. grrrr!

What do you reckon? Am I kidding myself trying to run OSX on the 8600?

Ditch the GUI, it'll run fine.

What version of os x server is it? (and if it is new and legal grr you! ;) )
How much ram is in the 8600? On older macs this makes all the difference.
<plug>
My copy of os x server 1.1 is legal and runs fine on older hardware and is for sale
</plug>

There are also utilities to get rid of the extra "candy" of newer versions

heh... how much penguin? I've been looking for a good time on my 7300! (the 7300 has 64 MB of RAM)

I would really likeif I could get 10.2 or 10.3 server for an early g4 or late g3

yes - it's a legal version (10.0.something) I purchased it for a company coz I support their local network (I set up an iMac server which gets used for filesharing between Macs and PC's as well as running Filemaker server - no web serving or ftp, we'll probably set up another iMac at some stage...) I've got 352 MB of RAM on the 8600 but I think it's the bus speed which is letting me down.

cool....

I ran 10.2 server on my iMac 233 with 96 MB of RAM.... I would do it again except I really didn't have a big enough hard drive to do anything much...

the iMac would make a great IW 4.0/5.0

yeah, you need 1.2gig just to load the OS, let alone putting some files on there for sharing/serving

I'm not sure. I don't have the original disks/manuals with me (it's at the office) We purchased X server and a G4/733 early last year in some kind of ex-demo deal that we did with the local Mac shop for about $6000.

I'm taking a look at XPostFacto now - anybody know what the 'throttle' settings are all about?

I'm not too sure about command line either - never used it and I'm a little scared In any case i'd rather have the GUI coz I want to be able to work (play!) on the Mac while it's serving

that's what 10.0.something is...

actually I believe the rhaplooking one was Mac OS X server version 1.0 there was a 2.0 also methinks, then it was 10.1 and 10.2 (I have 10.2)

yeah... iMac has a 4 gig drive... but 10 gig or higher seems to be the pref on the IW... I sometimes do hosting for other people... (maybe not with the iMac though)

WooHoo! I'm posting this from the 8600 on OSX. The kernel panic has gone away, and I am now running at a moderate (but still slow) speed. At least it's almost bearable now

oh yeah, it's 10.0.3 I might throw some updates at it....

congradulations!

remember, the computer is slowest when it'sbooting up and warming up.. as you start doing things over again and if you leave it on, it'll be pretty good...

I don't mind if a computer takes 10 minutes to boot, because I know that usually it'll be very fast when it's ready for me to use it...

ther was a rhaplike OSX server... it wasn't a 10.x version though...

I said it was mac OS X server 1.0 and 2.0, not OSX server 10.1 and 10.2

dunno about this 10.0.0.3 or whatever it is....

This is cool. It just loaded into classic and I'd never actually seen a Mac do that before (I never bothered on the office server coz all it does is sit in the corner and serve - no one actaully uses the machine)

I am feeling somewhat better about wasting so much time on this project now that it seems to be working

OK, call me dumb - but what's Aqua? Also Cory, what's IW?

Classic is running a treat - I can open Photoshop and it's not too slow. I was thinking about ditching this OS but now I'm having so much fun I want to put it on all my computers (pity my other computers are a Celery 700 or 68k Macs, however there is a 6100 laying around here somewhere....)

Now I'm off to set up the QT server - gonna stream something to my PC... looks like no work is going to get done today

1. Aqua: (Ackua), The GUI that OS X uses
2. IW: (Eye-Double-You), Intrikit Weaver, Cory's server project

Oh that Aqua. Well yes I do like the GUI, but then I've seen that before while setting up the office server.

The Version I have, 1.1, is the rhapsody-like one. It served me well, but was too old to cover all the areas I needed in just one server solution. I also don't know nix enough to use it well. <plug>It is going for $70 shipped 48 states if anyone is interested</plug>

IW stands for Intrikit Weaver, but yeah that's how we do pronounce it (thanks ML5 )

I would take you up on your offer penguin, but that's too much for a wee bit too old

I am planning on running 10.2 server on my iMac as IW5 eventually.

It was a few hundred bucks, right?

I know that the Macintosh Server G3 that it came with cost many thousands of dollars though.

heh... $499 for ten client and $999 for unlimited client are the current prices...

methinks it was like $799 and $1299 before... something like that

also, I simply don't have $70 with which to buy OSX server from you penguin

Yesh, it cost me a good deal of money to get, even on ebay, and I have seen the price of $500-1000 several times as well. (but that IS the newer version, but still).

It really is a just plain cool OS, because you can see all the elements transitioning to OSX we have now. One of my favourite things is how they kept the key assignment right. (ex: cmd-n makes new folder, cmd-shift-n makes new window)

Small Dog has it for $250 + shipping, so $70 is more than fair. I'd buy it, but I already have 2 copies. And its faster than 10.1 on my iMac, a lot faster.

hehe... yeah I can imagine how it'd be faster...

10.1 was generally... "not very good" and 10.2 improves effeciency alot..

server X version 1 and 2 are smaller than 10.1 and .2

Remembering all this stuff is like a game
