Ok I am now afraid to ever charge a PB battery again. The story goes a bit like .....this.....:

I was charging the battery for my *new* PB 170......it had been charging for no more than 3-4 hours when......BOOM, it exploded. Not completely, but the one side DID fly off at enough speed to lodge itself in a cardboard box and no my head thankfully. What did i do wrong? charger bad? battery bad?

*shudders* (thinks to self what a horrible death for a battery....)

Wow that's something new I haven't hear from the 100 series Powerbooks (not including 190). Hopefully this also didn't destroy your Powerbook as well. That would be horrible.

When I first saw a post titled "kaboom" in a powerbook forum, I thought it was going to be about a 5300....

I think one of the few things that can cause a battery to explode like that is a short between the terminals. Maybe the charger has a short in it.

Good News: PB is still a-ok.
Bad News: Charger and battery both toast, literally. No way of testing to see if it was the charger or battery now.....don't know who to point fingers at now. I guess not much help i can get now, but thought i would post anyhow, rather bizarre happening. ooOOoo, forum idea...hehe....unexplained and mysterious 68k happenings....hehe

Hey, the exploding batteries was fixed with the 5300 and 190...

*Pats PB 190*

It was Sony's fault really, but those laptops and their batteries never made it out of testing.
