Hello!

My Mac SE FDHD has a Mac OS 6.0.5. The problem I have is I cannot format my disks (HD floppies) as 1.4 MB. It proposes only 400K or 800K (single or double sided).

Is it possible to have the possibility to format those floppies in high density format (1.4 MB). If it is, what's the problem? Hardware or software.

Thanks to help me!

Best regards,

dbbis

The problem is that you have an 800k floppy drive. However, it is fairly easy to swap a 1.44MB floppy drive into an SE.

I do believe you have to do some other motherboard mods before just simple adding the drive and expecting it to work. I think the SE service manual specifies the procedure

The SE FDHD is inherently supposed to have a 1.44MB "SuperDrive" floppy in it, as FDHD stands for "Floppy Drive High Density", therefore putting a 1.44MB floppy in it won't require any tweaking. I'm just going to assume that at some point in it's life, his SE had it's original 1.44MB drive swapped with an 800k by a stealthy scavenger.

OK! Thank you very much for your answers!

If I have the courage, I will change the floppy drive, and see if there is a difference!

Thanks again and best regards,

I agree with the previous posts. The SE most likley had an 800k Floppy put in it at some point.

But there IS a difference between a SE FDHD and an SE SuperDrive.

An SE FDHD can't read/write MS-DOS floppies, but a SuperDrive can.

It's a slight difference in the SWIM (Super Woz Integrated Module) that is the floppy device controller.

My Suggestion is this:

Find an External 800k Floppy drive (you can get one for around $10 most likely).

Then, buy a HD floppy drive, and swap it out with the 800k Drive in the external case.

You'll end up with 2 floppy drives, and it's safer and ALOT Less work than opening the SE case.

If you ARE opening the SE's case, please see the "Aquarium or Terrarium" thread in the Lounge. I've been writing advisements on how to open the cases, what to look out for, and how to discharge the CRT (something you might want to do when swapping out drives inside SE's)

Agreed. Safety first when dealing with greyscale CRTs.
