Well, folks, as most of you already know, I've just gotten my beloved SE/30 up-and-running again, but I'm having some trouble with its system software...
The 2-gig internal drive that I'd installed a while back had a copy of MacOS 6.1.somthing, but it wasn't a full install, so, when I found another drive that had OS 7.1.somthing, I just dragged the newer OS onto the internal drive, and copied it over. Everything seemed to go fine, except now the internal drives copy of the system doesn't seem to be "blessed", and nothing I can do will bless it. As a result, it's really finicky about whether it'll boot from the internal drive, and I don't know what to do about it.
Any ideas would be most helpful. Really, the best possible thing would be if I could get some kind soul to make me a compete set of OS 7.1 or 7.5.5 disks and send them to me, snail-mail... any takers? I'll make it worth your while....
Thanks,
SpaceBoy

If you'll reimburse me for the disks and postage I'll send you the disks. I'd recomend a set of system 6.0.8 (2 disks) and a set of system 7.x (more than two disks)

While it is a pain to do, you can make the disks on a pc with a mac emulator. It's a pain but does work so long as you can use 1.4mb floppies.

Two tricks:

1) Sometimes you can get an older Mac to switch systems by double clicking on the Finder or System.

2) Partition the hard disk and install different systems on different partitions (one per partition). Then use the Startup Disk control panel to choose which OS to boot with.

The only other issue that I can think of is that the SE/30 does NOT need a System Enabler. So if you copied over an OS installation from another Mac that does use an Enabler, it might be creating crankiness.

Good Luck!

I've tried this, but to no avail - the System Folder still looks like a plain folder, without the Mac-logo.

That's a grand idea, which I'll keep in mind as the project progresses! At the moment, however, I just want a working internal drive, so I can sort through the dozen-or-so old SCSI drives in my closet and harvest all the cool/useful software I find. Once I get everything squared away, I'll seriously consider partitioning...

That's a great tip! I bet there's an enabler lurking around in there somewhere.... I'll dig around later, after work.
Thanks!

I think that there was a trick to reblessing the system folder, like dragging the system and finder out of the system folder, rebooting, when it blinks ????? at you, insert a boot floppy, and redrag the system and finder back into the system folder.

something like that, google for rebless system folder

To re-bless a System Folder, all you do open the folder then close it again. If the folder has the usual 'System Folder' icon, it's been blessed.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation.

Well, I've tried this several times, but to no avail. I also removed a coupe of system enablers, but this hasn't helped either. At this point, I'm pretty sure I've got a SCSI problem, as it seems to boot fine (most of the time) if I've got an external bootable SCSI drive connected when I start the SE/30... so maybe I'll install one of the smaller drives (like, 160 megs) internally, and use the 2-gigger as an external... or something...
Thanks for all the help, folks!

Sounds like a SCSI termination problem. I haven't seen it in a mac, but on other boxes I've seen termination problems between internal and external scsi strings. Are you sure the internal scsi drive is terminated properly?
