I bought some memory from a company from America.I weighed up the pro's & cons of what to buy & from whom. I was pleased to pay about £50 for 256MB of memory, this included shipping. I was pleased when my memory was delivered in good time. A good deal done? I was dismayed when approximatley 2 weeks later the "shipping company"(not the company I bought the memory from), sent me an invoice for approximatley £15. I have contacted both companies & the company I bought the memory from claims; quote: The bill is for customs tax. ___ can't add this fee to your bill. You are being billed by your country's customs dept. If you have any other questions let me know.
Will I perhaps recieve a bill in say another months time, for shipping tax & then another for packing tax? As an Englishman may say IMHO it certainly isn't cricket. No mention had been made of this charge & I didn't arrange shipping they did so shouldn't they pay any tax on that shipping? I don't know what to think about this, any advice? shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive os 8.1 128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive PPC7600/132, 4.23Gig & 500 Meg drives, 8X cd os 8.6 Performa400(deadintheattick) 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" |

Customs tax is your responsibility because its charged to YOU by your government for any items you import into the country. Why did you think you could import memory into your country cheaper then you can buy it over the internet from your country (assuming it wasnt stolen)?

I thought I had mentioned this might happened when I suggested this. It doesn't happen every time though. However 65 UKP is still pretty good for 256 MB of RAM, the retail price in the UK was 99 UKP for 32 MB last time I looked!!!!! and it wasn't that long ago.I don't think you can get out of paying it, you could probably sell the RAM that originally came without machine to cover the cost and still be left with 256 MB. In fact tell me what RAM you had originally and I might be interested in buying some. I scored a 6400 back in the UK for my sister (talk about long distance liberation) it only has 16 MB of RAM though which isn'e enough to do anything. If you have any 16 or 32 MB DIMMs I'll buy them off you. -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

Yes Shak, any merchandise (as marked on the customs label), is liable for VAT. However, they can't check all packages so most will get through without being checked. I've never had any packages stopped (though getting the sender to mark the customs form as 'gift' helps also). You were just unlucky this time. Jobf http://jobf.kicks-ass.org |

I refer to goth's reply. quote: I thought I had mentioned this might happened when I suggested this. It doesn't happen every time though. Cheers goth Perhaps I missed the bit about customs tax & your right it is still a good price(relativley), Now I have 320MB & I think I will keep it all, I allways see memory as a good investment, if I had it spare you would be welcome to it though. quote: Yes Shak, any merchandise (as marked on the customs label), is liable for VAT. I appreciate your reply jobf. Thanks for all the reply, it was just a shock to me, something that I hadn't budgeted for, it won't however break the bank & at least I have some experience now.
