In Dayton, Ohio, they have a yearly event called Hamvention. It is a huge 3 day long electronics fair, and you can typically buy Macs (and nearly anything else electronic) at truly desperate prices. I went today and bought a Beige G3 tower that had been in a fire for ten dollars. The inside was filled with ash and some of the metal parts were badly rusted, but none of the parts appeared to have actually been burned or melted. They pulled the hard drive on it, so I have not been able to test it yet, but it has a 32X CD burner and a SCSI 3 card in it, which is always a plus. The guy I was with bought a Powerbook 5300 for about 100 dollars. They seemed to have a lot of Powerbook 5300's this year. I also saw a guy with a pallet of LCIII's, and another guy had three (!!!) Enigma machines for sale. They were all in the 10 to 20 thousand dollar price range though, which is way more than I could afford. I usually go ever 2 or 3 years, since I am a "ham". Last time I went I got my Dell 17" monitor from a guy who must of stole them because he ripped all the labels/shipping info off the box when I bought it. There also was the rather large man selling duo's for like 250 bucks. He is there every year. He had some 5300's the last time I was there. Everyone took one look and was like, "psssshhhh! It's an old MAC! What could you use one of those for?" I would just roll my eyes and walk away before I got into heated Mac Vs. PeeCee debate in the middle of the "road". There also was a guy I had a nice 20 min conversation with, about the newton he was selling, and about macs in general. As it turns out there is quite a bit of 68k Amature Radio stuff. They are mostly used for Packet Radio. Which in case you guys dont know (which most of you probably dont ) is when you hook up a computer to your radio, and send packets of data much like the internet, throught the airwaves. It is kinda slow, but it is cool. Mostly everyone who sells any kind of mac laptop thinks it is worth way more than it is. Though the first year I went, when I was looking to get out of macs... (yes a very low point in my life.) A kid offered me 50 bucks for what turned out to be a PB 3400c! With 56k PCMCIA card and a 10/100 card as well. It was in perfect condition. He said his dad didnt want him to have a mac anymore. I said no however.(stupid I know but I didnt know about every mac model then) After I got back I was almost in tears after I learned what I had just done. I was quite mad at myself. But I recommend even if your not an amature radio operator, you should go. You can find some great deals on stuff and sometimes there are rare finds. Last time there was a guy with a semi full of macs. In case any of you care or are ham's yourselves, my call sign is KC8MRS.68k Macintosh Liberation Army Recently Recovered from Deep within Enemy Lines: Christophillis- Lt. Cory, I ment to put emphasis on SLOW. Oh and, there is the little matter of actually being able you have your radio transmit to people across the country. Since packet is usually done on 2 meters, or 14x.xx mhz. Or 6 meters. (these are two of the amature radio bands). These frequancys because they are relitivly high frequancy do not travel far. The furthest I have gotten with 2 meters is Louiseana. But that was with good weather conditions, and a little help from tropospheric ducting. Lol. Also there is the little matter of everyone who wants to use it taking the exam... You have to pass the FCC's Amature radio exam. This isnt like CB. Not everyone can pick up the radio and talk. The exam mainly consists of good operating procidure and a bunch of physiscs. The wave propagation/ particle kind. But really anyone can do it if they want to. I passed it when I was, I think... 12,13,or 14. You could start a revolution in amature radio, I guess... if you really wanted to re-write all that software, and get a licence. 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Recently Recovered from Deep within Enemy Lines: Christophillis- Lt.
