Well, I had not made a hack in a while, so the other day I sat down and added a light to my mouse. Here are some pictures.http://www.geocities.com/arrakis666/mouse.html I used a Dremel to cut out the Apple logo and fitted it with a piece of optical plastic from a car dashboard. The light is just an LED and a resistor hooked to pin 3 of the ADB connector. Now, I must come up with a way to illuminate the keyboard... What would be even cooler is another LED (preferably a bright white one) if you could fit it under the mouse button so light would leak out from the button seams.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

Nope, but the parts might be small enough to cast in clear resin or to vacuum form. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Nice hack! With one glowing eye in the middle of its forehead, that mouse should be renamed Cyclops.I wonder if one could hack in a polychromatic LED and link the color of the LED to the quadrature phase of the wheel encoders or a mousetick counter. It really is a cool hack Could you provide a diagram of the inside conection, is it easy to recognise pin 3? & does the LED have two connection pins which both connect to pin 3? I'm off to find old electrical equipment that I can salvage the LED's from. quote: I wonder if one could hack in a polychromatic LED and link the color of the LED to the quadrature phase of the wheel encoders or a mousetick counter.
Rather than an insessant colour change which I believe the above would create, how about different colours if the mouse is clicked & or click commanded? I want my keyboard lit up! shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive os 8.1 128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive PPC7600/132, 4.23Gig & 500 Meg drives, 8X cd os 8.6 Performa400(deadintheattick) 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" |

Wouldn't psychotic colour changes be appropriate for gaming? We could call the mouse Psycholops.Colour changes with a mouse click would be easy, colour changes during a mouse drag a bit harder, and colour changes with command-click would be hardest of all. But it sounds like a fun hack! I don't know it may be, truth is I've found the "Mac gaming" scene rather dry/empty, non existent, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. It may be funny to stick a very bright bulb in the mouse, that way the whole mouse could glow & you could keep your hand warm! shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive os 8.1 128 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive PPC7600/132, 4.23Gig & 500 Meg drives, 8X cd os 8.6 Performa400(deadintheattick) 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" |

Well, time for some ASCII art.../--------------\ | | | 4 3 | | | | | | 2 1 | | _________ | | |_______| | \--------------/
The crappy picture above is supposed to be a diagram of the ADB connector on the end of the mouse. Pin 1 is the ADB signal. Pin 2 is the power on signal, when shorted to ground, it will turn the computer on. Pin 3 is +5 volts, and pin four is ground. You will have to use a meter to test out which pins on the connecter line up with which pins inside the mouse, it seems to be different with each mouse I tried it on. The LED was shorted across pins 3 and 4 with a 500 ohm resistor to prevent the LED from burning out. Making the diode change colors when the button is pushed would not be that hard, but making it change colors based on the speed the mouse is moving would be pretty hard. There is not a lot of room left inside the mouse as it is, and something like that would require at least a few IC's. One thing I had considered was putting a bright white LED on the bottom of the mouse, and painting the botton silver so that the light would shine out between the mouse and the table. Definately. Since the Quake III/Unreal Tournament era, not many of the real blockbusters have made it to the Mac. And then, the ones that did most probably won't run on my iMac! -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |
