Just got me a new notebook. A powerbook 5300cs, brand new factory refurb! I paid a bit much for it but it's a local apple dealer I like to support. The beast has a 90 warranty from Apple. It's a bit old and slow and I wish it had an internal cd, but I think it will hold me until I can get a 12" ibook with combo drive. Besides, it is the first powerbook with a powerpc cpu.

Cool! Try and see if you can locate a CD ROM from a PowerBook 3400. Should work.

No room for a CD. The bay is a 3.5". The good thing is that it has 2 pcmcia slots. I just upgraded to OS 7.6.1 by booting from a Compact Flash card. I'm thinking of getting a wi-fi ether card for it so I can hit the web anywhere in the house.

Congrats on the brand new Powerbook. I also agree with you about supporting local dealers. As for CD-ROM, you can always get an external SCSI CD. And once you get your iBook, then the 5300 can become a cool hacks project. You could always turn the machine into an ultra-compact fileserver by installing a massive IDE laptop drive and an ethernet PCMCIA card. Or go diskless by booting from a Compact Flash card.

Enjoy your non68k!

EDIT: LOL! you beat me to it on the booting from a CF card. WiFi surfing is fun, although I have not been able to get Appletalk file sharing to work over my WiFi setup on my 190cs.

Maybe with a beatup one. This one is going into the collection once I stop using it.

You light three batteries off in the shop and you'll never live it down. This one appears to have all the refit markings and should be unlikely to flame on.

Speed has been ok so far. I can't get it on the net yet so that still needs to be checked. It seems to be a nice book 24 hrs after.

Thirty seconds after posting this it erupts into a flaming laptop of death

Hey now...

My notebook has shown no signs of becoming a fireball. I am having a problem with the battery indicator giving a false reading, but no flames.

ut oh!

But yeah, about the 5300, well, remember that they only caught fire in the testing lab. The firey 5300s never made it to consumers.

*gasps*
